Tougher Sentence's for 'One Punch Manslaughter'
We would like the Criminal Justice System to review the sentencing guidance for 'One Punch Manslaughter'. The maximum sentence for 'One Punch Manslaughter' is 8 years. It is time for a change in the law, so sentences better fit the enormity of the crime and in some way act as a deterrent.
Crimes which result in death should be treated more seriously, so as to ensure that the increased focus on the fact that the victim has died as a consequence of an unlawful act of violence, particularly were the perpetrator has a history of violence.
Joe McDermott aged 52 years; died 93 days after being punched once to the head in a totally unprovoked attack. The person responsible for killing Joe was at the time on bail for assaulting a woman 4 weeks earlier.
Joe’s killer was sentenced to 7 years which was reduced to 4 years 8 months because he pleaded 'GUILTY' of which the judge said he would serve 2 years 4 months.
