Crown Street and Primrose Hill in the heart of Brentwood have a unique character enjoyed by residents and visitors to the town. The boutiques and cafes of Crown Street offer an alternative to the chain stores of the high street and are a major draw of visitors. Tranquil Primrose Hill is enjoyed by people walking from high street to the station and is used by many disabled people for access to the town centre. But this area, like many others in our town, is currently at risk from excessive and unwelcome over-development. There are currently planning applications for four 4-storey developments in Crown Street, large buildings that will dominate the skyline of the area, leaving it in the shade. These high-density developments will compound existing difficulties with congestion and parking. The cramped, one- or two- bed flats will do nothing to provide the family homes that our community needs. Construction will involve the demolition of the historic Wesleyan chapel on Primrose Hill, will use construction methods which may damage other buildings in the vicinity, and will cause untold disruption, noise and pollution for over a year'. At a time of almost unprecedented re-development, we need to make a statement about what is appropriate for our town. We need to send a message to our town planners, as they develop the revised Brentwood town plan, about how we want the place that we have built our homes, businesses and communities in to look in the future. Any new developments should be in-keeping with the needs and wishes of local residents, and the character of our historic town. Please sign this petition to let our councillors and town planners know how strongly you feel about protecting the character of the town. Ask them to reject the current plans and force the developers to suggest something more sensible. You can also email us at sensibledevelopment@hotmail.co.uk for more information about the Primrose Hill development, and to join our campaign.
