As you may know, David Cameron has announced plans to make changes to the Social Housing Tenancies. Such changes will involve secure tenancies being changed to 2-year tenancies.

The changes are to be made by summer 2011. All new tenants will sign 2-year tenancies, at which point their financial situations will be reviewed. If it is decided that the tenant’s financial situation has improved sufficiently, they could be faced with a 6-month eviction notice.

I think that this is the wrong move to make.

Social and Council housing tenancies have ALWAYS been secure, providing an important and necessary source of confidence and security for tenants.
Under the proposed changes, only new tenants will be affected. But how long will it be until it affects all tenants?

And what are the possible effects of these changes on the current economy?

The possibilities as I see them are as follows:
People will have less incentive to go back to work

The country’s debt will increase as a result of more people signing on

Companies will struggle to stay in business due to lack of people willing to

work, thus affecting the economy and creating another downward spiral

So if you feel the same way that I do, you will agree that this is going to be a negative move for the whole country – therefore please sign this petition.

I have notified MP Ben Gummer by e-mail of this petition, and have written a letter to PM David Cameron notifying him of this as well. The Government’s own petition site is currently under review, which is the reason why this petition is being hosted on this site.

Let's hope that the government will listen to this.
