Second Chance Act: Bridging the Road to Recovery

There is little to be gained from a life in the correctional system. Prior to the Second Chance Act, released citizens were given very little support in the reentry process. Erosion of the former inmate’s social support system, lack of social skills, government housing restrictions, economic instability, and community fears of decreased public safety are all barriers to successful transition for these persons (Drakulich, Crutchfield, Matsueda, & Rose, 2012). The Second Chance Act provides a shift in spending that places more focus on evidence-based rehabilitation rather than billion dollar sanctions that provide little to no support in preparation for reentry.
