We the undersigned demand that The McClatchy Company and specifically the Tacoma News Tribune remove Frank Hughes as the beat writer for the Seattle Seahawks and manager of the "Seahawks Insider" sports blog. Mr. Hughes has been assigned to the Seahawks beat since July of 2007. During that time the quantity and quality of Seahawks coverage has diminished to the point that it is nearly unreadable. What was once the most highly acclaimed sports blog on the internet is now a shell of its former self. When Mike Sando was running the blog he would post many times a day and keep us updated with Seahawks goings-on at all times. His posts were almost entirely original content. He attended practice each day, and provided fans with a unique insight into the team we all love. To his credit Mr. Sando was rewarded with his hard work by being lured away to ESPN to contribute to their blogging network. Mr. Hughes takes entire weeks off during the season. He does NOT provide original content. Many of his team updates are merely copied and pasted team press releases (which are written by Seahawks public relations staff). Things are so bad during the off-season (prime reading time for a fan of a team) that Mr. Hughes takes the blog "dark" for upwards of two months to go on vacation. During this time he provides NO content. Immediately upon his assignment to the Seahawks blog he refused to even acknowledge the Seahawks Insider or contribute to the blog, so Mr. Dave Boling (a columnist) had to take over the management of the Insider to prevent further loss of readership. Mr. Boling did an excellent job. During this past offseason during another one of Mr. Hughes' extended hiatuses the Tribune appointed Mr. Eric Williams and Mr. Ryan Divish to contribute to the blog, and again the quality of the blog improved with more original content appearing. However, throughout this second year of "working out the bugs" it has become painfully clear that Mr. Hughes has neither the talent, nor desire to continue with the standard that has been set as a Seahawks beat writer/manager of the Seahawks Insider. We feel that it would be in the best interest if Mr. Hughes were replaced permanently and immediately by somebody who will put forth the effort and achieve the high standard that has come to be expected of those who work for The McClatchy Company and The Tacoma News Tribune.
