| 24 | Shirley Rodriguez | Children are already feeling the effects of funding cuts to education with teachers leaving the career due to increased unfunded mandates and lack of support for what they do best, educate children!
Additional cuts to mandated services in my school district means that cuts will need to be made in nursing services. Nurses will be replaced by health aides who do not have the knowledge or skills to manage the health care needs of children with specialized needs, i.e.: tube feedings, catherizations, tracheostomy suctioning, management of seizure, diabetic disorders to name a few. In addtion the families and children in the "notch" group who have little to no access to primary health care, rely on the skills and knowledge of the professional registered nurse to remove and/or mediate health related barriers to education. Families who can afford and know how to seek out health care for their children will also be affected if more Medicaid cuts are made.
Unless a lay person including legislators, have first hand knowledge of what is actually happening in public schools, there is now way anyone can understand the challenges children and staff face on a day-to-day basis. Not every child lives with a nurturing and supportive family who values education.
As a professional Registered nurse, I see both extremes - the "haves" and the "have not"s. All children deserve to be safe, healthy and educated to their potential, but I believe that continued cut to mandated services will be the downfall of this country. Please make an effort to get into the trenches to see for yourself the many dedicated edcuators and school nurses who are trying to do the best they can with fewer and fewer resources . Then, and only then will you realize the incredible efforts we make to help all children and the need to at least maintain funding for mandated services.

We are TOTALLY opposed to cutting this important funding the schools. We have seen first hand the burden of supplying special transportation to our most severely handicapped students. And have also seen the important work schools do in linking families with needed services.
Our values as a nation are certainly skewed if we cut funding for disabled children and their families while continuing to cut taxes for our wealthiest citizens! |
