Many parents and clinicians lauded the governor for signing SB 946, which went into effect on July 1, 2012. This law was supposed to ensure that insurance companies who provided mental health services, would also be required to provide autism therapies to their clients as well. With some exceptions, this new bill has been trampled over by the refusal of insurance companies to pay fair market rates to clinics. Many clinics have now been asked to make steep cuts in their pricing scheduled, effectively creating a business model that ensures bankruptcy. Children are being shepherded to "preferred" vendors, and many families have seen their therapy times drastically reduced. We MUST not allow health insurance companies, with profits in the billions, to circumvent this law that was intended to help the special needs community.
