A open letter was sent to UC Riverside Chancellor Tim White calling for accountability, democracy and transparency in his administration and the task force on speech and assembly at UC Riverside. Tim White has appointed a 'task force' (here too) whose members were invited by the university administration to rewrite protest guidelines. The first meeting is scheduled 9am-12pm, Jan 05, 2012. Guanyang Zhang, a co-author of this petition has written to Tim and called for his administration to be accountable for the previous protest guidelines, and make the 'Task Force' democratic, transparent and representative. Puzzlingly, Tim did not disclose the meeting time and venue in his email to the campus community. He did not announce the invitation of Chris Edley, Dean of UC Berkeley School of Law in his email either. Open letter to Tim White: Tim, I applaud your removal of the previously posted UC Riverside Student Protest Guidelines.
However, your administration has not been held...

UC Riverside Task Force on free speech and assembly and to rewrite protest guidelines, whose members were invited and appointed by Chancellor Time White, will meet on Jan 06, 2012 (Friday) at room 0154 Hinderaker Hall. Time White issued two letters on Jan 03, 2012, first addressing to the entire campus community on the meeting of the 'Task Force', and second only to the members of the 'Task Force'. In the first letter to the entire campus, he did NOT disclose the meeting time or venue. Neither did he mention that he has invited Chris Edley, the Dean of UC Berkeley School of Law to this meeting. In his second letter to only the 'Task Force' members, he said Chris Edley will tell us about 'the complexity of managing such events [protests]' . See his letters below. The Task Force consists of 3 students, among 19 in total (4 students were invited and one declined). This meeting is not open to the public. Tim White's first letter to the entire campus: To the Faculty, Staff and...

On Dec 12 Tim White announced his plan to form a task force to review, revise and (one day later) rewrite the 'Protest Guidelines'. The members of the task force will be selected by invitation. He did not detail the process and composition of the task force. After rounds of inquiries and emails to the university administration, the composition was revealed to a student 'for the sake of transparency', quoting Cynthia R Giorgio, Assistant Chancellor. The composition: ·
4 students: two graduate and two undergraduate (reps from
ASUCR and GSA, an “occupy” participant, and a student active in the
petition effort) · 4 faculty members (the chair of the
Senate, a rep from Faculty Welfare, one active in the petition effort,
and another who wrote the chancellor early on to express concern) · 2 staff members (one staff assembly, one represented employee) · 2 deans · 2 vice chancellors · 2 UCPD · 1 strategic...

a plan to form a task force to review the guidelines and the second announcing
the removal of the guidelines. Also available
at: http://deanofstudents.ucr.edu/policiesProcedures/Pages/default.aspx
In his letter
to remove the guidelines, Chancellor White says “the document does not
accurately reflect UC Riverside’s demonstrated commitment to free expression
and peaceful, non-violent protest”. Also, he '[r]egret[s] any confusion and
discontent caused by the document' and he admits that ‘[t]he document and its
posting were not worthy of this great university'.
