My name is Julien L. I am a 14-year-old Minnesotan-born, cheesehead-loving teenager and I recently read an article in The New York Times that greatly alarmed me. Not only as a boy scout who has spent many summers and winters enjoying the natural environment of the Midwest United States, but also because I am concerned about the environmental future of our nation. I write this petition hoping that you share my concern for Wisconsin and other states in the same position.
A bill could possibly be passed that allows the company Gogebic Taconite (GTac) to build the largest open pit mine in the world and contaminate and destroy not only the largest freshwater lake in the world (Lake Superior) but alsoWisconsin's land, including a Chippewa reservation six miles from the mine.
Wisconsin needs our help in fending off companies like this. Do not let a company destroy one of our inland states and one of the biggest freshwater lakes in the world.
