Name: Elizabeth Wright on Jun 11, 2007Comments: IR/PS should really consult the student body when they are making major changes to the school. Anyone student would tell you that they would prefer resources to continue to be dedicated to things like keeping good professors around like Victor, then switched to programs that are destined to failure like the 5 year MPIA for undergrads. I (and many other potential students) would not consider going to IR/PS if I knew undergrads would be attending my classes, even if they were high caliber. That being said, the administration needs to become more in touch with reality, stop doing stupid things like cutting the language program along with great teaching staff, at the risk of alienating alumni and disuading new students from attending. Save Victor!Flag

He is a valuable asset to the school and the administration is doing itself a huge disservice by downsizing him. Victor is one of the few IRPS professors that brings true character to the program and I would be incredibly disheartened if he left. The school would be at a great loss. He is truly unique and irreplaceable!Flag

Name: Matthew Owens on Jun 11, 2007Comments: It has come to my attention that our Spanish professor, Victor Zambrano, is reconsidering his return to instruction at IR/PS in the fall because the number of classes will be reduced making it difficult for him to justify the commute and sacrifice of other opportunities. The loss of such a fantastic professor and the decrease in class offerings and therefore near doubling of class sizes will greatly compromise the integrity of the language program. The intimacy of a small language groups is integral to effective learning of such unique subject matter. Furthermore, the experience, enthusiasm, and engagement of Mr. Zambrano is irreplaceable.Flag

Name: Joshua Cohen on Jun 11, 2007Comments: As a graduating second year, I have no problem telling exactly how I feel about the situation without the possible repercussions that some first years may have. The reality is that Victor's Spanish class made IR/PS for me. I was severely disappointed in the lack of classes which teach culture and understanding of the societies which we easily define in all of our other classes in solely a quantitative manner, and I have indicated so in curriculum surveys, class surveys, etc. Victor is a tremendous teaching resource, in the amount of work he puts into his classes, the quantity of knowledge he has to offer, and the quantity of knowledge I feel I have gained from his teaching. I was extremely disappointed to hear that a Fulbright Scholar professor would be "downsized" in order that his contract might not be expanded to give tenure. At the beginning of my second year, I made the decision to take Spanish as an elective, having already completed my language requirement, mainly based upon the fact that Victor would be teaching the class level of my instruction. This is no sleight to Professor Pedregal, as never having had her as a professor I cannot comment on her teaching, however I knew that taking Spanish on a personal level was conditional upon Victor's teaching, a fact I deem indicative of his skill and ability and respect for that. While I cannot believe that such a decision has been made regarding the quantity of classes offered, and I have no reason to believe that it has anything to do with a minimization of students with a Latin America focus, I strongly suggest that this decision be reevaluated. I know that I probably would have made the decision to transfer to another program in the initial 2 quarters had I not had the refreshing knowledge and environment provided in my Spanish classes.Flag

He has also become a good friend of mine and I feel that IRPS is making a huge mistake if they fire him. I am fortunate for taking his classes during my two years and feel sorry for those who will not be able to benefit from his knowledge of the language and the culture any longer.Flag

The language program in general is a key component of the IRPS international focus; nothing should be done that might downgrade the quality of language training that students recieve.Flag
