Mya B. is a young filmmaker born and raised in Chi-town. She currently resides in Brooklyn, NY where she came to be around people of like mind in the independent film industry. Graduating from Columbia College in 1995 with a concentration in film studies gave her the writing and production skills to pursue her passion as an independent filmmaker.
From working as a PA on several independent films and interning she decided to venture into her own documentary project to make her way into the film world. After two years of groundbreaking interviews and historical information, she has just finished her documentary entitled, �Silence: In Search of Black Female Sexuality in America.
Her first documenary, \'Warrior Queens\' was shown in 1994 at the Dusable Museum of African American History in Chicago. Her short script for Maya: The Illusion, won honorable mention in the American Gem screenwriting competition and she just finished a feature length script called, Auntie Carmen.
Mya B. is featured on a new reality show, \'Can\'t Get a Date\' airing on VH1, April 14th at midnight. Her film is profiled as she goes around the city of New York on various dates.
Mya was a finalist in the 2006 BET RAP it UP competition. She recently finished a Needs Assessment in Brooklyn on Black male ex-offenders with HIV/AIDS. The information gathered from this study is the basis for the BET finalist short, \'An Angel Scorned\' and she is working on a documentary dealing with \'Prison and the spread of HIV/AIDS\'. This film will be a part of the Silence series part II.
She is now working on a campaign to \'Save the Slave Theater\' in Brooklyn because she believes that this historical landmark should be perserved, can generate income to the community and provide an arena for independent artists, like herself. In addition to that, John Phillips is a conscious minded brotha who is caught in the system. \'He is an elder that needs our help\', she says.
