Aurelien GuilloryI havetaught there since1973-interior design. the last15 years have been muchmore multi-culturaland multilingual--at least 60% francophone -a reflection of our city. what will happen to the 1800 students & 80 teachers??? the legacy of Saidye B to nourish the future artists--what is the future???
AnonymousA valued Montreal institution. It would be a blow to the arts in Montreal if the Fine Arts School is closed.

Brian LomasThe Saidye Bronfman Centre has been an priceless cultural resource provided by the Jewish community to Montrealers of all ethnic backgrounds for 40 years. The YM-YWHA's proposal to close it is a sickeningly philistine act.
sharon kobernickyou are correct. art is more than theatre. Most elementary schools do not have art teachers nor do their regular teachers do too much if any art with their students. Few high schools around have decent art teachers. Most are uneducated in the field and teaching a few subjects with art being thrown in as one of them. Art promotes creativity! The Saidye at least used to promote art and creativity!
Jackie Rae WloskiBeing personally involved with the centre and especially the etching atelier for the last 23 years, I am definitely upset over this closure threat. Besides my own displeasure, I am also thinking of all the other wonderful facilities that would be lost, the staff, many of who are artists who depend on teaching to support themselves, and the students and professionals who would be displaced.

Maral GarabedianIt is a great shame that the Saidye is closing...I took some drawing classes there in 1981, great teachers...it's what got me started in the Fine Arts Field. I am now a new teacher there. What a shame!

Debby MaymanI think this is a complete injustice and should be re-thought. It has been such a successful venue for numerous years. One of my daughters thoroughly enjoyed the summer camp and my children (as adults) were very impressed with the jewellery making courses.
AnonymousShame on all those responsible for closing such a great school that truly serves the community: Jewish and otherwise.... Shame!

Ted FriedmanWho exactly decided to close this important institution? I am outraged. Does anybody know who the official directors of this institution are? A verification in the database of the Registraire des enterprises du Québec, under the words ‘Saidye Bronfman Center for the Arts” reveals no organization under this exact name. The closest result is ‘Saidye Bronfman Centre for the art news bureau” with an address on King Street in Toronto. This is public information which you can verify on the site of the Registraire des enterprises du Québec. Which brings me to the following: who exactly decided to close this important institution? These people should be identified and required to provide explanations. We seem to be placed before the fait accompli, and by whom? A list of people who are identified as the ‘Board of Management” of the Centre appear on the first page of the Centre’s recent (Autumn) brochure. All interested should demand from these people why the decision to close. Board Members of a corporation have a duty to protect the corporation’s interests and not to destroy it. It is not because some people want to donate money for performing arts that the Saidye Bronfman visual arts school should be destroyed. Are these ‘generous donators” controlling our community? I am a long time student of the center, especially in stone sculpting, for which very few affordable facilities exist in the city and I cannot approve and do not understand what happened.

Elizabeth MitchellAfter almost ten years as a photography student I was devastated to hear the news that the Saidye was closing its art school. Aside from university/cegep programs there will now be no teaching of photography in English in Montreal. You have eliminated a unique resource in our community. I for one will never support the theatre school you propose.

Jean-François AvonI took at least half a dozen classes. I still have 35 some odd hours due on the use of the darkroom. Montreal and it's Jewish community will loose it's best and the last true remaining art-photography non-institutional school. What a pity ! Why favor only one type of art at the expense of all of the others?

Barbara ChapmanPlease, this is such a valuable school for the whole "art community" of Montreal---don`t close it down!
AnonymousI am a teacher candidate (that is a teacher in training) and I, along side Mr. Fletcher, feel sad that many of our schools no longer host art programs. To hear that programs such as those offered by the S.B.C. are no longer supported...well it breaks my heart. We cannot all grow up to be corporate managers and bankers...some of us might actually be a Van Gogh or a Monet! How will we ever know unless we continue to sponsor art programs....They are vital for initiating creativity and are a wonderful outlet for our emotions as we live within this stressful and, often times, difficult world.
