The petition
In a rural desert community with extreme summer heat and many natural and agricultural water hazards, it is imperative that there be a clean safe place for the people of the Palo Verde Valley to learn to swim, recreate, exercise and cool off! The PVHS pool is the one and only such facility available to the entire community and to close it forever is unconscionable!
Over the years the pool has been used by students and teachers of the district, but also by the children of the valley for swimming lessons, the swim team, college classes, by law enforcement for the purposes of training staff safely, adult fitness programs, parties, the city’s Recreation Department and more. Use of the facility has also provided summer jobs for many individuals as lifeguards and swim instructors.
Not only is it against the law to swim in the area’s many irrigation ditches, but the swift current of the Colorado River is unsafe for young and inexperienced swimmers. Many members of the public could face undue harm by not having a safer alternative for summer recreation activities.
By signing this ipetition, we ask the School Board to overturn the decision to close the Palo Verde High School Pool and to work with the community to find a better solution for the current problems with the facility. We also pledge our support to the board for the solutions that will make it possible to keep the High School Pool working and available to the children of the Palo Verde Unified School District and the citizens of the Palo Verde Valley.
