we actually pulled it off and the park is staying open. i cant thank you enough for backing this when it felt like they were really going to shut it down. lets keep an eye on things just to make sure they stick to their word.
NY Gov. David Patterson is threatening to close several historic parks around the state including Thatcher Park which has been a trademark of the Helderberg Mountains, Including Berne, Knox, Westerlo and many other surrounding towns. It overlooks the Captial Region and has been home to many, many field trips for kids. The park sits along the Helderberg Escarpment, one of the most fossil-rich formations in the world and the most dramatic natural feature of the regional landscape. Its a wonderful experience that the Gov. should see that closing it... will not be a smart thing to do!
im still reading through all your stories about school trips and weekends up at the escarpment. its clear this place means way more to everyone than just some lines on a budget sheet. im working on getting a meeting with folks at the park office so they understand exactly what they are threatening to take away.

im honestly blown away by how much this has taken off. seeing so many people speak up for the park shows the governor that we arent going to just sit back and let this happen.

I grew up hiking those cliffs. It would be a huge loss for the whole county to lose access to that beauty. keep it open.
