Name: Adam Berry on Sep 8, 2010Comments: Stating what should be obvious to 'decision makers': any library is a massively valuable resource for whole local community - to close one is an act of cultural vandalism, even when at worse at the behest of our smug, self-interested coalition using their 'big society' slogan as a shoddy front for trying to making everything someone else's fault.Flag

Name: Solange Samuel on Sep 8, 2010Comments: As times get harder, as they will, libraries will be the only refuge available to those who are the most destitute for some light relief, information ,education and more importantly their sense of belonging within their community. To remove a library from a community is a tragedy as it is the very soul of the people that is being destroyed. This must be avoided at all costs.Flag

Name: Rachel Cannon on Sep 8, 2010Comments: I think it’s shocking that the library can close when we should be encouraging children to read. This is an important resource for our community and as a mother of a young child who uses the library on a regular basis I would find it difficult to go to Catford or forest hill. The government supports bookstart which encourages children to read, without a facility close to all the local schools, nurseries etc it would make it hard for people make the most of the initiative. There's not a huge amount of facilities in Lower Sydenham, to take away one that is used and well supported is appalling.Flag

Name: Christine Lock on Sep 9, 2010Comments: Closure of Sydenham Library would affect 77% of local children. Some may be taken to other libraries but it would not be the majority. I was never taken to a library by a parent and could only visit the one within walking distance, which opened up the whole world to me. The Cabinet Office is looking for suggestions as to how to make local communities more cohesive and self-reliant. I suggest not ripping the heart out of them.Flag

Name: Kay Bovis on Sep 9, 2010Comments: Please don't do this-if we want to build communities libraries can play a key role. Some of my fondest memories as a child is being taken to the library and I've never lost my love of books. I came from aworking class family that lived on an estate-I do believe libraries have helped open doors and widened horizons for me. Please don't deny kids a similar experience in Sydenham-libraries do change lives.Flag

Name: Jason Billingham on Sep 9, 2010Comments: It's wrong to close institutions that offer cohesion within the community. Libraries are so important for this role and once closed, will take a lot of money to re-open. As soon as they are closed, the area becomes a dead area, with no life. This has a huge effect on the well being of people. Please think very carefully of the impact of such a move.Flag

Name: Linda Craven on Sep 9, 2010Comments: Although I live in West Yorkshire my grandchildren use the library in Sydenham. I use our local library regularly with the children I childmind who really enjoy the storytime and looking at and choosing books to bring home. I feel that libraries play a very important part in fostering childrens' interest in books both for enjoyment and as a resource for future learning. To loose this ammenity is depriving, not only the whole community, but in particular the future generation from discovering the pleasure and value that books bring into your life.lFlag

It would be a most tragic loss to the community if it were to shut down by the Mayor and would mean that literacy in this area would be even more effected. PLease leave the libary alone!Flag

Name: KAREN HANS on Sep 9, 2010Comments: Sydenham and Bellingham are deprived areas that need more library services, not fewer! These should be delivered by professional staff as they have the knowledge and skills to develop reading amongst toddlers through to the elderly, provide information literacy training for all and libraries should provide access to a wide range of books to inspire and educate - not just the most popular current reads.Flag

It is going to effect the most under-privileged members of the community who don't have access to what most people take for granted. Money saving should be looked for in other areas, not here.Flag

Name: C Kubilius on Sep 9, 2010Comments: I have used the library as a parent and teacher for about 9 years. For the local schools that use the library, travelling to Forest Hill library on any regular basuis is too far-so all of those children who use it in that capacity would miss out. For those of us in the community who use it, the fact it is so local is important-that offers a chance to 'pop in' or meet others in the community for more organised activities, which would not be met by the pother libraries further away in the borough.Flag
