Majorities are often formed already by those ex officio members. Others are demoted to mere spectators. And now the Senate. Elected members should outnumber unelected ones. Always!Flag

Name: Harold Kroto on Mar 13, 2009Status: 02Comments: In my experience it has always been wise to discuss matters as widely and deeply as possible - the proposed reduction in democratically elected representation runs counter to the intrinsic spirit of a University - The University of Sussex in particular. In its first 30 years, Sussex was a vibrant and exciting institution - it may arguably have lost its former lustre - due perhaps, in part, to poor guidance from the top. There is no obvious reason to believe that this change will help to regain that former status – indeed the reverse. It seems aimed only at easing the passage of legislation which may not be, or be seen to be, in the interests of the students and staff of the University. Although democracy does not guarantee wisdom, common sense and history suggest that good decision-making is an unlikely consequence a reduction in democracy.Flag
