Isnt it about time someone took a look at staff members such as Michael Farthing, as I'm positive his salary is disproportionately higher in comparision to other employees. There would be considerable cost saving in the removal of staff like Mr Farthing as opposed to support staff and educators.Flag

Most universities have too many over-paid managers, and savings could be made here. So heavy-handed and insensitive an approach to six students risks doing real damage to a University whose reputation as a beacon of enlightened standards is now in tatters.Flag

Name: Susan Curnock on Jun 14, 2010Comments: Please reconsider your management style and work WITH your staff, not against them. Everyone wants the best for the university, so please do not treat the people who work for you as if we were living in Victorian times. Consultation would be preferable to coercion. This is a PR nightmare for the university. I certainly would not choose to start my degree at a university which calls police with dogs to a peaceful student protest. Neither would I wish my son, nor any of my friends' children to attend. It reminds me of the beatings of students at the Vietnam demonstrations in the USA. Is this the kind of image you wish to promote? Because this is certainly what you are doing! Please reconsider your approach to both your staff and your students. I enjoyed my time at Sussex and am extremely angry and upset by the way you are treating your staff and students. Furthermore, whilst I understand that the enormous amount of money you are spending on buildings comes from a different budget, it is clearly irksome to those who face job losses in an uncertain economic climate. The new equipment in the library is slow and impractical - I'm afraid it was poorly thought through and ill-managed. Students have to stand to use the catalogue screens, there is nowhere to place reference sheets while looking up books. The book return is faulty and does not register the books. Surely this money has been wasted and would have been better used to save some much-needed jobs?Flag
