ClothildeEditrorial Assistant, Channel 4We need to keep our documentary strands alive to communicate real voices to society, if this is not a principle BBC role I don't knwo what is!

Amanda TheunissenfreelanceStoryville is almost the last single doc. strand and certainly the last one with a truly international feel. It would be a dereliction of the BBC's public service remit to cut it back and so weaken its standing and access to independent film makers

Sue CollinsProduction Manager, Century FilmsAt a time when documentary as a genre is threatened on all sides by the encroaching culture of reality TV, it would be tragic if the BBC were to abandon their commitment to what has become a beacon of quality international documentary-making
Lou BolchNAthis can't be allowed to happen. we need more programmes that show us life outside the narrow domestic terrain of most British TV not less.

Simon ScottN/AI am baffled why, in a period where feature length documentaries are frequently getting worldwide theatrical releases, the BBC wishes to further choke the production of its own documentary strands, let alone Storyville, which ought to remain an environment in which innovative non-fiction programming can blossom.

James PriceIndependant Filmmaker"Storyville" remains the one place in the BBC's factual output where quality programming is the first priority rather than the pursuit of viewing figures. The BBC is doing itself and us a grand disservice by this relentless drive to becoming a parody of their commercial competitors. In the process of so doing they lose the respect which they had justly earned over the years for their output in Documentary and Current Affairs. Instead of protecting their brand identity for the coming of "on demand" internet tv, they are consistently weakening it in the pursuit of viewing figures which will only give it temporary respite. What better than to prepare itself for the future by making its name once again synonymous with quality, a quality so well represented by "Storyville".
kath andersonfreelance writerStoryville is one of the most interesting, entertaining and worthwhile strands of BBC programming. Its distinctive documentaries consistently surprise with all kinds of fascinating subject matter. With so much TV starting to look bland, safe, dull and inward- looking Storyville stands out for its quality, variety and the distinctive vision of its film makers. Please don't cut funding for this wonderful programme. Storyville upholds the ideals that set the BBC apart and I would like to see its position strengthened with additional funding. Storyville is a strand the BBC should be proud of; don't spoil one of the very best things you do.

Derek MurrayProducer/director Inspiral FilmsDon't throw the baby out with the bath water!
AnonymousAnonymousYou only have to read the reviews that Storyville receives in the press and from viewers on its website to see that Storyville embodies so much of what the BBC is meant to stand for. It is a great shame that the corporation wants to destroy this

Laure VermeerschDirector, SculptingskiesStoryville is inspirational and risk-taking, it produces films that have guts, appeal and style. This is where the BBC will find inspiration and create the future. Documentaries are getting high profile support in cinemas because they re-invent our views of the world. Without Storyville the BBC is abandoning such aspiration. Create a cross-platform arm to Storyville if you wish, don't kill the spirit and give up on vision.
AnonymousAnonymousPlease reconsider.
AnonymousAnonymousthis is an excellent strand and should not be cut at all - increased if anything!!
AnonymousAnonymousIf these are the sort of cuts planned - add more people to the list of those who don't trust the BBC anymore.
Christine HarrisviewerThere is so little worth watching on the BBC these days (let alone the rest of the channels) that it is utter madness to do this. There is a continuing need for a platform for original, creative and thought provoking documentaries. Dont kill Storyville!

Andrea CornwellProducerI am currently producing a film that was due to go ahead with Storyville - and hence is now looking like it will have a very difficult financing route out of the UK. There simply is nowhere else that seems placed to fill the void for intelligent, creative international stories. Whenever I talk to people in and out of the industry, Storyville is held up as a marker for some of the best work on British television. I agree that not only should Storyville not be allowed to disappear as a producing strand - it should be strengthened.
Brian WelshEditorSurely storyville is one of the few strands of intelligent factual programming left. The nation is obese with a diet of gross "reality" t.v. fodder. These choices make me us all seriously question the integrity of the decision makers. We are tired of being told how to tidy our homes by pseudo educated bimbo's and moron's. I'm sure the voice over artists will be happy.
Gary SanctuaryStudent Composer @ NFTSDo we pay a license fee so we can get the same cheap drivel that's on the other channels?
David McDougallFreelanceThis is the final tipping point, after what can only be described a monumentally catastrophic year for the BBC, now this. Which headless chicken took this decision? Nick Fraser has long been recognised amongst the Independent sector as one of the true champions of documentary film-making and Storyville a cornerstone of BBC4's output. By halving his budget to a £1mn you are effectively cutting him (and us) off at the knees. Colleagues I've just told about this are furious. Shame on you Mark Thompson, Jana Bennet and the rest of the BBC Executive Board.
