103 Rita ShamiaHead of Charity & Corporate Films, Media Trust ProductionsAs someone who now produces films for the corporate and charity sector, we are benefiting from the haemorrhaging from mainstream television of talented directors unable to develop their skillls working on quality programmes. Great for us, terrible for factual programme making. Its not enough to say 'save Storyville', what about saving the documentary genre and with it the industry's future, never mind its reputation? American drama anyone...?

105 Carol WoollamsRadical FilmI am old enough to remember when the BBC led the world in documentary film making. Each week I would make sure I was home to watch the latest 'true story' mostly they were beautifully filmed, on film, an hour long and lyrical, whilst still allowing the point to be made often quite forcefully. At a time when the USA is seeing a resurgence of documentary film making the BBC decides to kill off our home industry. Even Blair would have considered such entente cordial a step too far. I predict that we will shortly see documentary in 'fashion' again in the UK. BTW I am not a documentary film maker, but would like to think that at some point in the future I could be, this view is shared by many in the British film community WAKE UP! stop listening to the bean counters and start commission more award winning documentaries not less!

111 Laraine PorterDirectorStoryville showcases some of the most innovative and groundbreaking documentaries broadcase anywhere in the world. The documentary tradition in the UK is something we should take pride in - not just major series such as Coast and Mountain- all of which are excellent, but the single doc too.

124 AnonymousAnonymousSurely the terrestial broadcasters should be trying to nourish the nation's minds, not rot them with the hysterical, idiotic programming they tend to favour.
125 Geoffrey SmithProducer/Director, Eyeline FilmsAs someone who has made over 15 documentaries for the BBC this is a very destructive move. Storyville gives the BBC so much kudos both here and aboard that it is worth strenghtening not cutting
126 AnonymousAnonymousStoryville is known around the world as an unparalleled home for auteur documentaries. Cutting its budget to next to nothing would be a tremendous loss for the BBC and for the British public.
127 Ed CoulthardMD Blast! FilmsStoryville has been getting better and better.Curtailing the chance for the greatest directors to make authored single films strikes at the very heart of what public service is television is there for.

133 Charles Stewartcameraman/directorIt is vital to protect Storyville one of the BBC's most important and valuable series on television. Its being under threat leaves me with little confidence in BBC's top management .
134 Ros Franeyindependent exec producerI'm shocked that the BBC in its drive for savings is effectively turning its back on independent single documentary. As docs get increasingly squeezed by commercial imperatives, it's feeble of the BBC to be following suit. I also believe that the recent cases of misrepresentation have largely come about as a result of pressure to sex-up programme content. The effective abolition of Storyville sends a message to film-makers and the general public that genuine documentary no longer has a place within the schedule. A genre built up over a century of remarkable British and international film-making will be consigned to the bin as far as Britain's leading broadcaster is concerned.
135 Orwa NyrabiaProducer, Proaction Film
136 rani khannaindependent filmmakerThe BBC cannot do such a thing, it is outrageous, shocking and shameful to want to remove funding from the best doc strand there is in the UK. What is needed is revolutionary protest, like the French do, to get what they want and nothing less. Who is up for it?

144 Roger GraefCEO Films of RecordI have been urging for years that Storyville's budget be increased by a third - a further £1m - because it delivers such broad impact across the entire world in which docs are made and shown. It is far and away the best value of any BBC investments in corporate and cultural influence among a select but influential group of fdilmmakers and broadcasters. A host of important films would not have been made without input from Storyville - and the BBC. To cut its budget now, when the BB's credibility is under threat seems perverse and shortsighted. That also goes for the cuts to the docs budget generally, in favor of drama, comedy and entertainment - all of which are readily dfound on commercial channels. I hope the BBC Trust can head this off before it does permanent damage to the BBC, and to the documentary culture.
