Comments: This can not be allowed to proceed, as artists and former students we will not accept the neutering of an institution that has done so much for are education. Sculpture can not be dissolved. Students of CSAD, from whatever department you call home show your support, if we do not act now then there will be no fine art course left!

Comments: It is insane to close the sculpture department like it was to close MAP. These are/were the only departments that made it a reputable course. It was a brilliant Art college that stood out not only in Wales but the whole of the UK. I urge you not to damage it any further and to please open discussions with the many of us that oppose these decisions. Thank you.

Comments: Sculpture is an integral part of FIne Art - it forms a massive part of the contemporary art world - without it you may as well offer just a painting course because it certainly will not be representative of 'fine art' per se .... also I would like to raise the point that in the email sent to students about the cancelling of 4 courses - THIS closure of the sculpture dept was not made clear - totally underhand!

Comments: Such a rash decision to be made without discussion is a big mistake. How is Cardiff to sustain and continue building upon it's vibrant Arts scene without a yearly supply of graduates from all areas. Shocking.

Comments: CSAD is proud of its tradition for excellence in sculpture in its Fine Art, Ceramics and Textile programmes, at undergraduate, masters and research degree levels. The School is committed to maintaining these traditions and will be extending opportunities through a new degree for the artist maker, to start in 2012. The changes recently announced are concerned with the withdrawal of the sculpture pathway in Fine Art, but should not be taken as a withdrawal from sculpture, in its many forms, at CSAD, far from it. The new BA (hons) Fine Art will spring substantially from painting and printmaking; however any student wishing to work through sculpture will be enabled to do so. Recent degree shows attest the degree to which sculpture is undertaken by students working freely. This work will continue through one degree: named Fine Art. All facilities currently in use by the sculpture pathway will remain available to all students. These will be augmented by new technologies and a range of making processes, currently at Llandaff, to which many students have not had access, until now. The possibilities for working through critical practice in sculpture will increase. The changes have been brought about through the need to reduce student numbers, rationalize the portfolio and achieve a fully sustainable financial position for CSAD. A far more holistic and flexible approach is being taken than has been possible to this point. CSAD is proud of all that its graduates have achieved and is committed to ensuring that all students currently taking the sculpture pathway in Fine Art will continue with their studies to graduation, within the established curriculum.

Comments: This is a travesty, sculpture has been fine art from the Venus to Tracy Emin. To deny students the chance to learn sculpture is another example of penny pushing corporate bullshit. If you listen to the suits we'll all be taking mediocre MBA's and culture will be dead. Is this what you really want for future generations?

Comments: It would be a great shame to loose the sculpture dept after the media course has already gone. This will have a significant impact on the quality and diversity of work being produced and the calibre of students graduating to become the new generations of the welsh art scene. As the capital of Wales, Cardiff needs its Fine Art course supported and protected, otherwise you WILL see a significant negative impact on the Welsh art scene in the long term. This can be prevented NOW.

Comments: Although I did not study at CSAD, I am very concerned with the closure of this dept. As the only school of art in the capitol city of wales it should provide a wide range of supported, rich art ba's. This a sad situations for all artist's Wales wide, and in particular it will have a massive effect on the Cardiff art scene. The CSAD will fail to attract national and international talent.

Comments: When I arrived at Cardiff School of Art and Design (CSAD) to head up the Painting subject pathway 3 years ago, the Sculpture Department was the standard to meet in the Fine Art department. I simply don't understand the educational rationale to dismantle such a vital element of a Fine Art course, particularly when individual subject areas are highlighted as is the case at Cardiff. Although facilities are important, the most significant aspect of a successful course is the level and characteristic of debate that emanates from a course's staff. The disbanding of such an important group of expert practitioners is profoundly misguided and an immeasurable loss to the region.

Comments: Such a shame that the impact of this decision will have repercussions that extend far beyond the doors of the institution. The lack of a training ground for new artists in the capital will seriously undermine the cultural framework that has taken years to grow with CSAD as one of the foundation blocks.

Comments: The backlash from the closure of the Media Arts and Performance department clearly did not examplify the heartfelt plee from the past and present CSAD students. To continue with the closure of Sculpture eradicates the (so called) 'solution' of housing the ex-MAP students and rejects the space needed for another thriving group of contemporary artists. Sculpture gave students the space, material and support needed to cross between all disciplines available at CSAD. For this popular school of art to loose yet another significant area is a great loss for the creative future of Wales. The country that prides itself in its diverse creativity will not have the attractive pull for future students if it continues to ignore the voices of those who thrive on its original availibility of the cross-discipline areas.
