The system currently known as the record industry plans on buying the licensing rights to Prince’s material. The Artist's relationship with the major labels was famously complicated, and at the time of his transition, he understood the need to find creative and alternative methods of distributing his music direct to the consumer, without the need for corporate constraint.

For this, Prince was respected and regarded as a freedom fighter, a visionary who continuously fought for creative freedom and artist’s rights.

It was only recently that Prince won an 18-year battle to reclaim the rights to ownership of his work (if you don’t own the masters, the master owns you). Prince imagined a future based on a model that put artists in full control of their work and destiny. This would be a place where artists, creators and innovators would receive a fair piece of the pie, and were protected from exploitation, a place where they kept control over their art and how it was used and distributed.
