Name: Walter Claxton on Apr 1, 2010Comments: To demolish this superb architectural building will be sacrilege, we have enough Square box buildings in Sheffield, just take a look at Denby Street. Worse than that to take a valuable work space away from the artists and craftsmen is nothing short of criminal, this area is a living working museum and should be kept as such. These (Little Mesters shops) are our heritage, they made Sheffield the thriving City it became. We should not lose this part of our past, it is worth saving these craftsmen and artists to keep alive traditional skills which have largely been lost to mass production.Flag

Name: Anthony Bennett on May 7, 2010Comments: Small, affordable, workshops are essential for the future of creativity and industry. Sheffield has lost so many workspaces, without provision to replace them. This has led to a downturn in creative output. Not so good for our bid to become the City of Culture for 2013.Flag

Name: Jon P Baker on May 10, 2010Comments: The buildings contained within Portland Works now represent the sole surviving little mesters, supported by artists and others who also have residency there. As such it is far too important as a surviving institution of what made Sheffield what it is today, to be allowed to die. Moreover, opportunities exist to convert the buildings into a thriving hub with an existing financial and economic base, rather than a tentative/speculative venture at a time of depressed markets.Flag

Name: Jim Fulton on May 19, 2010Comments: Why on earth do we need more flats? The City is full of empty / unlettable / unsaleable flats and offices. We don't need more flats, we need to retain our heritage and Portland Works is a living, working example. Not a living museum, an ongoing collection of businesses that have "lived" and worked together for years.Flag

Name: Norman Fletcher on May 19, 2010Comments: These buildings are a part of the industrial heritage of Sheffield. They should continue to be used for small industry and as arts studios. Sheffield has enough apartments and offices already. This is the wrong area for that type of development.Flag

Name: Jackie Fletcher on May 19, 2010Comments: I just listened to the item on Radio 4 about the proposed redevelopment. It is a ludicrous idea, we don't need any more apartments; I have seen offices to let RENT FREE in Sheffield city centre. Let us hope that good sense prevails for once. Good luck in your quest to keep your essential working skills and the traditions of this Steel city alive.Flag

Name: Amanda Chuter on May 19, 2010Comments: As a regular visitor to Sheffield, it is its industrial heritage that encourages me to stay longer than I need. As a result, I book 2 hotel nights, use small independent restaurants, and visit the numerous small traditional shopping areas to enable me to explore the museums, galleries, canal, and places like Portland Place. Sheffield has planty of apartments, flats, offices - many empty awaiting tenants/buyers - just like hundreds of other cities and towns, but what makes Sheffield different is that it still has viable small businesses. These businesses, such as those at Portlland must be allowed to flourish, not just as heritage, but because these businesses make things that people buy, products that made Sheffield what it must be today: a dynamic city where people live, play and work. long live Portland Works as a place of industry.
