Name: Gareth Roberts on Feb 12, 2010Comments: Save Portland Works! Loads of my mates use space in this building, and if it was turned into flats they would not find somewhere else like it, and go out of business. Most importantly this building and what goes on in it is one of the few remaining living examples of Sheffield's steel & metalworking heritage. What more needs to be said!?Flag

Name: Katharine S. Boyd on Feb 12, 2010Comments: There is already insufficient affordable workspace or studios for small independent businesses in Sheffield so the loss of Portland works would be very significant. It would also be very sad to lose a place with such unique character in terms of both the buildings and the community of businesses located there. There are already more than enough developments of flats within the city centre that are not yet fully occupied and we can ill afford to lose any more industrial buildings. If this trend continues there will be nowhere in this city that little businesses can afford as estate agents ideas of affordable are totally unrealistic for most of us.Flag

Name: David Konopinski on Feb 12, 2010Comments: That part of Sheffield doesn't need residential accommodation. The city's craftspeople need suitable, affordable workspace to practice their crafts and teach future craftspeople. So much of the city's craft heritage has been lost. Portland works is the ideal location for preserving and nurturing these activities. It's about balancing short-term commercial gain and long-term heritage development.Flag

Name: Ian Howe on Feb 12, 2010Comments: I think Portland Works is a very important piece of English heritage and should remain as it is, a working piece of history. When it's gone it's gone. The Americans and Japanese would give anything to have living history like this! Wake up Sheffield and make Portland Works a part of historical Sheffield, it's part of what built Sheffield! Stand up for your heritage people, it belongs to you not Councillors and planners.Flag

Name: Mark Hobson on Feb 13, 2010Comments: Firstly: There are many brown field sites and sites that do not possess a Grade II listing building on them that are crying out for development. Look towards these first. Secondly: Do not forget Sheffield's heritage, who works here, what they produce and where we as a city came from. Not a lot survived the bombs of the WWII. Let us not allow what did to perish under the over used and incorrectly defined word, redevelopment.Flag
