Name: Ian Hudgings on Apr 6, 2007Comments: My pharmacy fills 800 prescriptions a week including about 30 prescriptions a week for pergolide. In my opinion, there are many more horses that take pergolide than people. It is imperative that this drug is available to the equine patients that rely on it for their very survival.Flag

Name: Mary Jane Hewitt on Apr 6, 2007Comments: My beautiful 11 year old Arabian horse's life depends on this drug. I give her 2 mg daily of the generic pill form. She has no side effects whatsoever from it. We desperately need this drug to be continued for veterinary usage without a gap in coverage. There is much university level research regarding the efficacy of pergolide in the treatment of PPID. It is the gold standard of therapy. Also, there is a movement in front of the congress to ban compounding pharmacies in this year, which is how many vets think the pergolide may still be available for the horses. In that case, there would no source of pergolide, and thousands of horses would sicken and die of laminitis. Years ago, butazolidin was not a good human drug, had many negative human side effects, and is not used in humans any more, but it is the equine anti-inflammatory of choice. Why couldn't we do the same with pergolide Dr. Hal Schott at Michigan State University has studied and recommended pergolide, as has Dr. Philip Johnson at Missouri State University. There is a large body of clinical research and experience out there. Thank you so much, Mary JaneFlag

Name: Anonymous on Apr 6, 2007Comments: Interestingly enough, the dosage for horses that has been proven to be efficacious is actually lower than that given to humans. No known cardiac side effects have been found in equine use, and even if there were, the benefit to risk ratio for equine use is weighted heavily toward the benefit side of the equation. Thank you for considering this petition.Flag
