Wallsend Labour Party are appalled at the declining state of the shopping facilities in Wallsend and the High street. The closure of the Co-operative Supermarket 18 months ago and the refusal of Morrisons to open their store has resulted in drastically reduced shopping facilities for local residents. As a result, the decreasing footfall in and around the High Street is threatening the livelihood of local traders and we feel that Wallsend Town Centre is in danger of turning into a ghost town if immediate action is not taken. Additionally, the news that the Australian owners of the Forum Shopping Centre has gone into administration only increases the fears and concerns of local people.

If we gather 2,000 signatures we can force a public debate which will require the Council to give us answers about what they intend to do to save Wallsend Town Centre from falling into decline.

Updates

August 16, 2010

The feedback regarding the decline of our local shopping facilities continues to highlight the urgent need for a cohesive revitalization strategy. I am currently reaching out to municipal representatives to ensure they recognize the gravity of the situation facing the Forum Shopping Centre and our traders. Your ongoing engagement remains essential as we prepare to hold the Council accountable for the future of our town.

The momentum behind this campaign confirms that the future of our town center is a priority for many residents. This collective response ensures that our concerns regarding the decline of the High Street will reach the local authorities for a formal public debate.

Everything is closing down. I have to travel to Newcastle just to do a proper shop. Rubbish.
