51 Eric NicholsonIn view of what are already major changes in the expectations and hopes of elderly people with regard to the help they may well need as age takes its toll, this further withdrawal of support by way of Care Homes and similar support , is yet another major set-back and it is hoped that further serious consideration be given to this disturbing situation.

60 Howard TurnerSurely even Staffs CC don't believe that this is good for anyone so why do they have to dress it up? Just be honest & say "we have to do this to afford the pensions of our employees". One day there will be a backlash against such heartless decisions.
61 Rene CarlisleI think it is outrageous that old people in need of care should be treated in this way. We help a lot of Third World Countries, with their poverty etc., we should take a leaf out of their book, they may not have much but the Welfare of the elderly is their main concern and priority.

64 michelle gibsoni think its discusting how social services are turning there backs on the very people they are supposed to looking after and caring for if they stopped having expensive nights out meeting in posh places cut down on wasteing money on drug&booze abusers they would have plenty ov money to look after our old people
65 RachelAt the current rate, there will be no basic welfare services at all. The manner in which this situation has been handled is a disgrace. Once again, it comes down to money, with an absolute blatant disregard for the welfare of those who need our help most.

69 Alexandra ScottThis is madness. Where will allthe people who are currently in the Care Homes and Day Centres go? into the already underfunded hospitals? Please reconsider this policy.

78 David RowleyThere does not appear to have been any consideration of the details for implementing such a policy. A Councillor from the SCC Cabinet was at a meeting at The Homestead on Tuesday night and he could not answer detailed questions about the implementation of the Policy. There does not seem to be a policy for Respite Care or Rehabilitation after Hospitalisation. From experience the Independent sector do not want to handle respite care as it does not fit in with their business plan e.g. they cannot have rooms empty while awaiting a respite case because of the loss of income. There is also the inability to plan ahead for respite care - presently we have been able to provisionally reserve a room for respite care 3 to 4 months before the date when care is required so that the full time carer can fit in with pre-booked holiday dates. If the county are suggesting block booking of homes in the Independent sector two points arise: why have they not discussed it with the independent sector and what is the cost likely to be? With reference to ‘care in the community’ it will not, and indeed does not now, work very well for many of the people who presently receive it. There is inadequate control of staff vetting for those who do this job. There is too little time available for them to carry out the duties for each person. There are too many people involved with each person leading to many of these people becoming very confused and therefore receiving very poor care irrespective of the cost. If there is a deficit of £31M if the homes stay open - why is this? Is it something that has been allowed to continue for several years and is therefore bad management? Is it something that will occur because of the need to upgrade the homes to meet new standards? If the latter is the case then surely that will also apply to the independent sector homes as well and that begs the question where has this requirement for improved standards come from? If the service is poorer because homes have to meet new standards then there should be a period for homes to be gradually brought up to the new standard. There has also not been sufficient discussion with involved parties about this decision especially those in receipt of the care at present and their relatives as well as those who are working in the care homes. In conclusion I have not seen or heard any clear statement of how the proposed closure of all the homes will improve services for the elderly and disabled people of the borough or anywhere else in the county.

80 Sandra BoultonBoth my mother and mother in law have been in care homes and we cannot fault the care that they received. My opinion is that council run homes are much better than private homes as they are run as a business.
81 Andrew ChellWhat care will be left for the elderly if the homes shut?
82 AnonymousTheir idea is disgusting, these people have paid taxes and national health all their working lives. It is very unfair to move people when they consider the care homes as their homes where they feel safe. Anyway where will the people go a lot of them will have sold their homes to pay for their care. If this is Labours idea of taking care of people the sooner they go the better.
83 ANN HALESAlonger time structure needs to be in place so that residents can be treated withthe care and dignity they deserve.Surely in this day and age for residents and staff to be notified about closure by phone is unacceptable by a Labour controlled council.

90 AnonymousThis is terrible. I have experience of a lady who wanted to be nursed at home. All she wanted was help to get up and put to bed but because everybody can't have nurses at the same time they wanted to get her up at ten and put her to bed at six thirty This just isn't practical The idea to have nursing at home might work in some cases but not all by any means. It takes a while to settle in an old peoples home and when you do you expect it to be your home for the rest of your life. if you are moved it can have a very serious mental effect that often cannot be remedied.

94 Ann J DixonWhat will happen to the carers who rely on periodical respite care for their loved ones so that the carers themselves can go on holiday etc? Also, what will be put in place for people who at present go to Day Care Centres such as May Place, which I have heard is also due to close? For some it is their only chance to socialise outside their own homes and also gives their carer a chance to perhaps go shopping or have a but of time out on their own without having to worry about their loved one. I feel very strongly about this as I have friends in this position who will be badly affected if these changes go ahead.
