AnonymousI've attended school in both US and Canada. The solution is NOT to eliminate calculus but to improve standards in lower grade levels.

CarrieCalculus should be necessary for the success of Canadian students in both Canadian and American Universities.
Rahul PillayI'm a student in Hong Kong following the British A-level cirriculum and I am totally against this move. The aim of schools is to EDUCATE students, to make them smarter and to prepare them for later life. I hope to someday see a shift, where things taught in Grade 12 can be taught in Grade 11 and more advanced lessons are taught in Grade 12. How can this be achieved if courses considered "too difficult" are dropped? If it's too difficult for some students, then they don't deserve to be following this course at this advanced level - why should those students who are smart enough or hardworking enough to deal with this material have to suffer? I don't advocate totally abandoning weaker students though - let those who can afford it turn up for remedial lessons or have a slower track that teaches them the proposed cirriculum - let students be in charge of the decisions they make, let them decided if they want to take calculus or not. -Rahul.
K. ChenStudents should not have an opportunistic gain taken away from them. They should have the decision to choose whether they want to take this advantage or not. Please reconsider this decision and make it an option for those students that want to challenge themselves.
Jose SandovalCalculus should not be removed from the curriculum. I have given my reason here: http://www.josesandoval.com/2005/12/ontario-leave-calculus-alone.html

Naoki NittaThe students should be better prepared in mathematics in lower grade levels, as early as elementary school.

Mark LangleyRemoving calculus from the high school curriculum will put students entering math, science and engineering programs at a serious disadvantage.

AlexDon't take away calculus, i went to school in canada, and you need to improve the system.
RayAlthough as an American student, this change in curriculum has no direct effect on me, I find it completely unacceptable to deprive Ontario students of the education they deserve.
Arthur LingThis is appalling. I've seen many students do terribly in first year university with the curriculum as it was. This will make it even worse.
Lindsay HaywoodI'm in grade eleven and so if Calc. gets eliminated I will be directly affected and really angry!!!

AnonymousI am in complete agreement. They are offering calculus in the 12U stream, however it is now calculus AND geometry, and there is a prerequisite of 12U Advanced Functions. Now tell me how i'm going to waste a credit on just getting INTO the calculus course I need for university.

JasonWhy put the next generation of college students behind? No matter what you remove from your silly curriculum, the subject of Calculus will ALWAYS remain a REQUIREMENT for entry to any respectable first-year university program.

Neil DesaiThis is nonsense. I have relatives in the United States that have the opportunity to do university level calculus (AP) in high school. Math is my strongest subject and I am considering becoming a math major in university. If anything, they should be talking about introducing a more advanced calculus course.
Brent YacobackCutting calculus from the curriculum is a mistake. Furthermore, it is frightening to think that the people making the decisions about the education of our youth would even consider this.

Rob GorbetI teach first-year engineering at the University of Waterloo and cannot imagine the loss that the elimination of calculus would cause. In the already-heavy curriculum of Engineering, having to teach basic calculus would mean removing other important courses to the detriment of the students.
