I ask that we expose these individuals for their ethics, in an ethical and resposible way. And I want to be given the opportunity to re-evaluate the situation and save the Football program!!!!!Flag

Name: Tom Beyer on Mar 23, 2003State: MICountry: USComments: In August of 1995, we accompanied our son to Michigan Tech and into the hands of Bernie Anderson. Jeff was 17 at the time and 450 miles from home. Bernie promised all of the parents that he would take care of our sons academically, physically, and emotionally. This was a great leap of faith for us, but the fulfillment of a dream for our son. Bernie never let us down. During Jeff's 5 years as a Husky, we attended every home and away football game, loving every second of it. The MTU flag proudly flew at our home every football Saturday. We also watched our son develop into a young man of confidence, commitment, and dedication. He learned teamwork, time management, and loyalty. Jeff worked extremely hard in the classroom and on the football field. He loved every second of it. Jeff was team captain his Senior year, earned his Master's degree from MTU the following year, and is respected and valued at the company he now works for; successes we contribute in great measure to MTU football. He always felt he was part of a large, caring family, headed by Bernie Anderson and his immediate and extended family. As his parents, we were also made to feel a part of the Husky family. We even enjoyed breakfast with you several times, once on the lawn of your home. Now, you have betrayed us. Allowing Rick Yeo's lazy, biased, and short-sighted decision to eliminate football at MTU to stand was wrong. I am a public school teacher and very familiar with budget cuts. It is never right or fair to balance a budget on the back of a single group. An AD is supposed to represent all sports under his jurisdiction fairly and equally, not just his personal favorites. It was an easy decision for Mr. Yeo, but cowardly. My heart goes out to the current players and coaches whose lives and dreams have been shattered in an instant. I also hurt for generations of Husky alumni. He has shattered their pride and spit in the face of their gridiron accomplishments. I will personally never forgive him for hurting our son and the dozens of other young men we came to regard as sons. An honorable man would have given us a chance to save MTU football. There is no doubt in my mind we could have and would have done just that. While Mr. Yeo may have quickly solved his budget woes, he certainly failed to consider the economic impact this decision would have on the community that you and he live in. Every time we attended a game, we stayed at a local hotel, ate at local restaurants, shopped at local stores, and took advantage of local entertainment and recreational opportunities. We returned for snowmobiling, Winter Carnival, and summer vacations. Many times we brought friends and family with us, thus multiplying the number of dollars being added to the local economy. We have been actively seeking property in the area. No more. We made yearly charitable contributions to the University. No more. My husband, a Delphi Automotive Engineering Manager has helped steer many local high school students to MTU and several to MTU football. We have always touted the value and respect associated with MTU. No more. It takes a special kind of student to succeed at MTU, and an even more special student to play football in addition to surviving the rigorous academic challenge. We were very proud to hear yearly that the average GPA of the members of the football team was higher than the average GPA of the general student body, proof that Michigan Tech attracted the brightest and the best. Members of the football team have gone on year after year to become the leaders and innovators in business and industry, highly sought after by employers. You will certainly lose a portion, if not all of these young men now, and with them you will lose the respect of the business world and the loss of your elite status as an engineering school. Was Mr. Yeo's decision to save himself some headaches and take the easy way out worth the loss of the school's reputation and the long term economic effects on the community Not in our eyes! Even though we live hundreds of miles from Houghton and our son has not lived there for almost 2 years, our small, rural community is in shock and disbelief. One of our papers, The Saginaw News has featured articles on the decision, wondering how it can possibly be justified. Whenever the Huskies played football at Northwood University or SVSU, the stands were packed with MTU alumni living and working in the area. If Mr. Yeo thought his nasty little decision would go unnoticed, he was wrong. A man who would show such disrespect for his University and disregard for his community is the wrong man for the job. Please consider the far-reaching effects Mr. Yeo has had on thousands of people and reverse his decision. Send him back to the drawing board to make the fair and equitable cuts he should have made in the first place. Give MTU football fans a chance to help solve the problem. Redeem yourself in the eyes of your community, your student body, and in the eyes of the thousands of others this decision has adversely affected. Take this opportunity to bring respect back to MTU. If you wish to discuss this with us in person, please feel free to contact us. We are looking forward to your response. tebel42@aol.com 989-755-3896 - home 989-757-4780 - work Sincerely, Tom BeyerFlag

Name: Rita Franks on Mar 23, 2003State: MICountry: USComments: We just purchased athletic sweepstakes tickets in support of the football program. We would never have purchased tickets to support any other program. We follow Michigan Tech Football and come to all the games. We donated money last season for a defibillator to be used by the football team. Mr. Yeo himself spoke at our breakfast last fall and told us the stadium was going to be under renovation this year and the university supported the football program. These were obvious lies and falsehoods. How can a University operate this way I fell betrayed. And then they wait until after all other programs have used their scholarship monies to inform players there no longer is a football program. This is deceitful. Someone needs to be held accountable to apologize the lies, deceit, and mistakes that have been made. I am sure the word is now out to never trust what the Michigan Tech Athletic director and University president has to say. I would recommend to all high school athletes to look elsewhere to play sports and seek a quality education one they can work with in faith and trust.Flag
