First let me be clear that I was an avid supporter of President Obama's election and even worked tirelessly while I was 8 months pregnant to ensure that working voting booths were in predominantly African-American precincts on election day. I am am no Republican and support having the option of a federal health care plan for the millions who are not insured. However, I am now alarmed that the new health care legislation President Obama has proposed will allow abortions to be funded by federal dollars and that such legislation WILL MAKE ABORTIONS MORE ACCESSIBLE AND POPULAR as a method of birth control IN MINORITY POPULATIONS. As an African-American business professor and former researcher, I realize that minorities have already been disproportionately affected by Roe vs. Wade. Without the legalization of abortion, African Americans, not Hispanics, would very likely be the largest minority population that exists in the U.S. Dr. Alveda King, niece of the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. wrote: "Abortion has taken a gruesome toll on the black community, killing more than AIDS and crime combined. Some 14 million black babies have been aborted since the 1973 U.S. Supreme Court Roe v. Wade decision that legalized abortion in all stages in all 50 states. That's equal to one-third of the number of blacks living today."1 Simply put, the current health care legislation that President Obama has recently stated he will likely force into law via party lines, will ensure that millions of African American and Hispanic American babies will be aborted. This is because our population bases have high numbers at or below the poverty line who are uninsured. THIS CAN BE STOPPED IF YOU DO SOMETHING. Tell your Congressman or Congresswoman and your Senator that though you generally support President Obama's premise of making health care available to every American, YOU DO NOT SUPPORT FEDERAL FUNDING FOR ABORTIONS in the legislation because this will disproportionately terminate the lives of millions of minority babies.
