The Mackinac Island City Council is considering a proposal from the new Northern Ferry Co. – a combination of Arnold Transit Co. and Star Line – to grant a ferry franchise to just one company, creating a monopoly on ferry service to the island.

The proposed monopoly would put Shepler’s Mackinac Island Ferry, which has served the island since 1945, out of business.

Shepler’s 150 employees would become collateral damage in the deal, unfairly losing their jobs through no fault of their own.

Northern Ferry Co.’s plan to create a ferry monopoly is unnecessary, inappropriate and potentially very damaging to the economy of the island, Mackinaw City and St. Ignace.

Free enterprise and healthy competition among ferry operators has served the Straits Area well for decades. It’s the American way!

The Mackinac Island City Council should reject any proposal to create a monopoly and instead work to maintain good quality ferry service provided by several privately owned and operated ferry companies, including Shepler’s.
