Comments: It seems senseless to me to use the current economic downturn as an excuse to stop teaching subjects in the humanities. Were these subjects more important three or five years ago than they are today or next year I seriously doubt it and I would like to challenge someone to quantify those changes.

Comments: Life long learn is an important opportunity for young and old alike as it enables subjects to tasted either as means of keeping our minds working or as a means of enabling people to determine their interests and possible work areas without commiting to an expensive course. It enables informed decisions to be made and at the very least opens a window that broadens peoples understanding and views. Its loss would be profound.

Comments: Access to education is of paramount importance - and those who have not taken traditional school-university pathways need to be able to access in different ways. As this then brings many into the university environment, to stop this first step or developing interest, is misguided and short-term.

Comments: At a time when the Open University has been expanding its Creative Writing teaching, it makes no sense at all to cut every single course in this entire subject. When I ran courses in Playwriting at the Centre in the late 90s they were extremely well-attended. It is a vibrant area with a great deal of potential to attract students. I can understand there might be a need to contract the subject area, to concentrate Creative Writing resources into the more popular areas but to cut all Creative Writing provision is wholly unecessary.

Comments: This is hardly the way to encourage lifelong learning and I beleive, in the long run this will be to the detriment of both the learning public and the University.

Comments: The government is supposed to be encouraging people to improve their skills. The Humanities course is an ideal way for them to do this, particularly if they have been out of learning for some time and are not sure what they want to do. Keep this course running.
