Name: Stephanie Orr on Jan 20, 2011Comments: I have been an avid listener and supporter of KUSF since I was a student on campus from 1986-89. KUSF needs to be given the opportunity to be self-sufficient if USF is no longer interested in supporting a college radio station. The station has given USF a unique opportunity to be a strong voice in the culturally diverse community of San Francisco. The students, faculty, KUSF staff and listening audience have all benefited from this partnership. Please give us a chance to save KUSF!Flag

Name: Diane Wallis on Jan 20, 2011Comments: I have lived in the neighborhood of USF for 25 years. During all that time, KUSF had been an institution that represents interesting, diverse programming. Back when I was a student at SF State, many of my friends were (and some still are ....or were until last week) DJs and volunteers at KUSF. I did work as a DJ myself for a time at KSFS at SF State and at times was invited to KUSF to come on-air to interview visiting musicians. It has been exciting to be a part of KUSF and it would be a big loss to not only the community in SF but also to the students at USF. As a former student DJ, I know the importance of being on-air as opposed to being online. Please give USF students the chance to experience the responsibilities and joys that come with communicating to a live on-air audience. Thank you for your careful consideration of this matter.Flag

Name: David Ramer on Jan 20, 2011Comments: As a listener and supporter of KUSF for 30 plus years, I am appalled by USF's decision to "kill" one of the best and most influential radio stations in the country. College/institutional run radio stations typically serve a larger audience than just their student body for a host of reasons, and KUSF over the years has become a local institution hosting many diverse segments of the community, not just alternative popular music. To pull the plug now, and in the manner being reported in the press shows USF has little interest in being part of the larger San Francisco community. Certainly not a very Jesuit like position. This was strictly a poorly thought out business decision for which USF should be shamed. And the Administration should fess up and admit so. I currently own a small business in SF and my staff and I probably listened to KUSF - 75% of the time, year in and out. Yes, we could listen to on-line radio, but we found the diversity, and cultural ties generated between the DJ's, staff and ourselves important and indicative of our wanting to belong to a wonderful San Francisco group. I would be interested in finding and supporting another venue for KUSF- but why, when the existing format and facilities provided by USF suit's San Francisco's needs and pursuits. USF should be proud of it's support of the community and not just look out for what they claim are the intersts of the students. As we all know, USF students are gaining huge educational benefits from sources outside of the ciriculum being sold to USF students. Lastly, KUSF has been instrumental in shaping my view of the world through it's musical offerings and other programming. For this I am grateful.Flag

Name: Mike Madavi on Jan 20, 2011Comments: Hello all, I am taking the time to send you this email in defense of KUSF. The shutdown and sale of the station is nothing short of a travesty and I urge you to immediately stop the reform. The station has been present for over three decades as a beacon of independent music and quality radio programming; it's loss is catastrophic. Corporate radio has a tight stranglehold on Bay Area radio as it is; the loss of KUSF not only tightens their grip but also eliminates the possibility of future generations enjoying free and unbiased radio. We should count independent radio as a treasure; the art form is dying. KUSF is one of the last remaining real stations left in the SF Bay, and by eliminating it you are virtually knocking out one of real radio's precious pillars in our community. I myself work for an independent music distributor that only deals with indie music and labels. Our business operates on the core principal of empowering those without the means to compete on a major level. We give indie labels a chance to find success in the digital marketplace which suffers, much like independent radio, under the weight of corporate music. I have also managed two independent Bay Area radio stations personally, 87.9 KSFH in Mountain View and 103.3 KSCU in Santa Clara. I am very familiar with the lack of independent radio in our beloved area and view KUSF's loss as tragic. Do not eliminate KUSF. You are trading the opportunity for your community's members to learn more about independent music and the chance for your students to experience the thrill (I use the word intentionally) of working in a real radio station at every level from DJ to station manager. And for what? A temporary solution to budget issues (which I am more than familiar with as a UC Berkeley 2010 graduate). The money isn't worth it. And we do not need another classical radio station. We need a proper independent station. KUSF is precious far beyond $3.75 million dollars. By selling it, you are selling a part of your integrity and inhibiting real musicians from being heard. Do not do this. Sincerely concerned, Michael MadaviFlag

Name: Cassidy Curtis on Jan 20, 2011Comments: I was a frequent listener to 90.3 KUSF for the 17 years that I lived in San Francisco. The importance of such an independent, diverse, free-thinking college radio station to San Francisco's culture cannot be overstated. Also, the talk about "moving KUSF online" is utter nonsense. It is the serendipity of turning on your car radio and hearing something entirely unexpected that makes KUSF so integral a part of the San Francisco experience. Silencing that radio signal means destroying the station as we know it. To make this decision unilaterally without consulting the students, their tuition-paying parents, faculty, staff, volunteers, DJs, or listeners is unconscionable.Flag

Name: Susan Leon Barrett on Jan 20, 2011Comments: I worked at KUSF from 1980-85, and graduated from USF in 1983 with a BA Degree/Mass Media Studies. Even then, there was always a sense of needing to prove our (KUSF) worht to the university. The manner in which this sale was handled is shameful and chilling. Hiding behind the "non-disclosure agreement" curtain is insulting. There was no fairness or openness at all.Flag

Name: Susie Kuo on Jan 20, 2011Comments: I fully support KUSF's mission to serve the students of USF and the communities of San Francisco. I believe this sale is motivated by greed and will greatly impact the lives of San Franciscans and the students of USF. This sale does nothing to benefit the lives of the USF students and the volunteers of KUSF. College radio and student programming has long been the punching bag in the name of garnering funds for a few corporate entities. KUSF belongs to the students of USF and most certainly the various communties of San FranciscoFlag

Name: Joanne Wong on Jan 20, 2011Comments: Contributing to the heterogeneity of radio airwaves is not only a benefit to the community, but to the academic community as well. Universities are and should remain major centers of culture, and KUSF helped showcase the diversity in sounds and ideas that exists in San Francisco and the Bay Area. Carelessly discarding this valuable asset is tragedy to us all.Flag
