Name: Elizabeth Gosse Widup on Jan 19, 2011Comments: Student radio is an endangered species - universities around the country are cashing in on the valuable resources associated with their stations at the expense of the students and the local music culture without any notice or community input. It's a shame and it should stop! There have got to be other ways to keep the students on the air. -Elizabeth Gosse Widup USF School of Law '01 Student DJ, KTRU Rice University '94-98Flag

Name: JJ Hollingsworth on Jan 19, 2011Comments: I'd like to point out that the secretive "gestapo" technique that USF chose to inform both the station and the public of their unilateral decision to shut down KUSF on the FM dial implies a guilty conscience. They are not amoral, they knew it was wrong from the beginning. That the President of the University has gone into hiding is also revealing of cowardice. I applaud the efforts to save the station through public appeal. --- JJ Hollingsworth, composer and sometimes broadcast guestFlag

Name: Kelly Alday on Jan 19, 2011Comments: My (now) husband was a DJ for several years at KUSF as well as an employee and student at the University - it is so sad to see that such an iconic institution has been shut down with no reason. Yes, I like classical music as well, but there are plenty of places to listen to classical - add more classical shows to the station, don't allow this sale to go thru... let the music live on - all music!Flag

Name: Jennifer Waits on Jan 19, 2011Comments: I am dismayed that University of San Francisco is planning to sell off the KUSF license to a public radio group. I am also disappointed that although the sale has not been finalized or approved by the FCC, programming from classical station KDFC is already being broadcast over 90.3 FM, bumping off long-time KUSF DJs without any notice. As a KUSF listener and a San Francisco Bay Area college radio DJ, I am saddened that USF is more focused on the lure of quick cash than on the benefits that their station has provided to students, faculty, DJs, listeners, and the broader community of listeners. Going online-only will limit KUSF is so many ways, not the least of which is reaching its broad audience in San Francisco. It's unfortunate that many universities neglect to realize that their FM stations are bigger than the university itself (oh, I guess they do...that's why they cash in for the $3.75 million) and should be cherished.Flag

Name: Kristin A Sumrall on Jan 20, 2011Comments: I once lived in San Francisco and sought out college radio as soon as I arrived. Irrespective of that, I am a long-time listener and supporter of many college radio stations and current Program Director at WCBN in Ann Arbor. I recognize the value of college radio in communities and cannot understand the recent spate of closures of stations like KUSF, KTXT, and KTRU. The fact that these deals have all been executed behind closed doors indicates that those taking part in them are fully aware of the stations' value to their listeners, staff, volunteers and supporters, and communities. If NPR wants to monopolize free speech on the center-left of every municipal radio dial, it should take advantage of the new law and start its own radio stations, and colleges which own licenses should find something else to sell off, like perhaps a quality education. Students who participate in college radio learn things they could never learn in a standard college class, and volunteer community staff at these stations can teach those students more than they will ever pay to learn at college. I could go on but I will stop here. KUSF must remain on the air, not get shunted off to become a worthless on-line-only presence. -KristinFlag

I can't begin to describe what a huge loss this will be for the community. I' ve been listening for 20 years and it is leaving a gaping hole on my car radio tuner. This is a vital resource that the city should not be without!Flag

It is a one of a kind station that should be allowed to continue. Let the community purchase it. Name: Eloise Leigh on Jan 20, 2011Comments: KUSF is THE college radio station in San Francisco, a city celebrated internationally for its independent character, and thrives on music and all the cultural progress that comes from freeform radio. For USF itself, an institution that is supposed to represent "higher learning", to so easily sell off one of its greatest assets to its students and the bay area community, is a shame and betrayal not just to music-lovers, but to everything USF represents as a university in the U.S. KUSF deserves better, but needs to at the very least exist on the proper channels to maintain the intellectual and independent community it feeds. Wake up, USF!Flag

Name: Karl Barrow on Jan 20, 2011Comments: There is no other station with the programming that KUSF had. I'm not financially well off, but I would have paid $100 a year to listen to KUSF. Hell, I would have put up with commercials to keep the same programming on KUSF. Why weren't we given the option?Flag

It's been a vital lifeline to SF's culture and community for me and I am CRUSHED to see that value squandered with yet another retreat to an all-online presence. The whole move feels dirty and underhanded to me, and I demand that this process be halted and opened to scrutiny.Flag

Name: Tom Erbe on Jan 20, 2011Comments: I was an avid listener of KUSF when I lived in San Francisco in the mid-80s. It is part of the city's cultural landscape, and will be sorely missed. USF will never regain this voice, and the city will lose one of the things that makes San Francisco what it is. Bad for SF, bad for USF, and sad to hear them do this for a small amount of money.Flag
