Furthermore, I find Internet Radio to be a better alternative to conventional radio stations for several reasons.
First, Internet Radio provides listeners with a much wider base of music styles to select from than conventional radio does. Whereas with conventional radio one is limited to the type of music they may listen to by the broadcasters in their geographical area, Internet Radio does not limit one’s choice by such things. With Internet Radio, the style of music that one may listen to is limited only by their knowledge of Websites that provide it. Due to this fact, a person is able to enjoy a listening experience they may not have been able to without the existence of Internet Radio. This leads to listeners discovering styles of music they may never have known existed otherwise; and they may be more inclined to spend their money on these new types of music then on ones to which they had previously been exposed.
Second, heavy taxation of Internet Radio stations that provide their services legitimately, and within all boundaries of the law only serves to drive these honest business people into bankruptcy. This not only deprives people of their preferred music styles, but also has the potential to give rise to more pirate stations. As people seeking the same listening experience become more desperate, the underground stations would step in to fill the void left by the loss of honest providers. These illegal stations would provide listeners with music without paying any royalties to the artists who created it, and would therefore be unaffected by any tax raises put against reputable stations. As the reach of the Internet increases the ability for law enforcement agencies to remove the pirate radio stations will diminish, thus leading to the further tax increases; which will start the cycle over again.
Third, for many artists who have only just begun their careers the existence of legitimate Internet Radio stations provides them with many opportunities. Internet Radio allows these new, and usually struggling artists to have their music heard by millions of people. With Internet Radio, they are able to do so in a way which if far less difficult, and does not carry the exorbitant cost that having their songs played on a conventional radio station does.
Lastly, it is far more convenient to be able to go to different websites with only a few clicks of your mouse and listen to music you like; rather than constantly adjusting your radio dial hoping one of the local stations has something good on.
