The Hall of Fame Game has been played annually in Cooperstown since 1939, and is a revered baseball tradition. On Tuesday, Jan. 29, the National Baseball Hall of Fame announced that Major League Baseball has unilaterally cancelled the game after this year's June 16 contest between the Cubs and the Padres. More than any other American sport, baseball draws strength from its traditions. Over the years, Cooperstown has come to exemplify the ideals in that tradition. In recognition of Cooperstown's unique place in the sport, MLB and the Players Association have agreed to an exception in the contract that allows the game to continue. There is no reason why the game can't and shouldn't continue. Commissioner Selig, we appeal to you as fellow fans: In the best interest of the National Pastime, save the Hall of Fame Game!
