Since 1961 Grampian Television has been the ITV franchisee for the North of Scotland, based in Aberdeen. It is now owned by SMG, which also owns the other ITV franchise in Scotland, Scottish Television, based in Glasgow. SMG have announced with effect from Tuesday 30 May 2006 the Grampian TV brand will be removed from the air and renamed as \"STV\". We believe this will lead to further domination by the Central Belt and disappearance of what has been part of our culture for over 40 years. The loss of the Grampian identity will result in the type of corporate blandness that has already happened south of the border, when Granada and Carlton merged. We hope SMG will reconsider their decision and allow both the North of Scotland and Central Scotland to keep their distinctive identities.
