Name: Christine Bastian on Feb 8, 2005State: MOCountry:Comments: My daughter is deaf, but thanks to the vital early intervention services from First Steps, she is expected to mainstream at Wildhorse Elementary with minimal services required in the first grade. Without First Steps, my daughter would have required years of Special Ed. and she would face a lifetime of exclusion and dependency..Please reconsider the value of this life changing agency. It literally makes a world of difference to deaf and hearing impaired children, their families, and the Missouri tax payers! Thank you.Flag

Name: Jennifer Burk on Feb 8, 2005State: MOCountry: USComments: Our daughter is autistic. Without the help of First Steps, she would never had made the progress that she has. I urge you not to cut First Steps funding. Taxpayers will be paying more to support these children in adulthood if they do not have early interventions!Flag

Name: Rebecca Ralston on Feb 8, 2005State: MOCountry: USComments: This is a very necessary program that Must be funded. These younsters that benefit from these services would cost MUCH more to provide services when they are older. I know many youngsters who recieved services from First Steps in their early years that by the time they were school aged did not require services or as many as toddlers. Please reconsider!!!!!!!Flag

Name: Sheryl Buttram on Feb 8, 2005State: MOCountry: USComments: My son participated in the First Steps program. He would not be doing as well today if he hadn't had early intervention. He has Down's syndrome and received therapies since he was 4 months old. He is now in a regular mainstreamed 2nd grade classroom at his gradeschool. I expect him to lead a productive and prosperous life when he grows older as do I with my other children. If he were not given the opportunities early on, he probably would be in a self-contained classroom which costs more money. Mr. Blunt please think before you act. You might be saving money now with First Steps, but you'll be spending more money in the long run if you cut this program. Please think about it!! I would be glad to share our family story to put a face with this program.Flag

Name: Margaret Carter on Feb 8, 2005State: MOCountry: USComments: How can you justify cutting a program that does so much good for the ones that need it the most The sooner they get the additional help they need to better off they are in the long run. Research has shown that early intervention is a critical part of bringing these children further along. Please reconsider this decision. Speak to some parents that have had the benefit of the program and some that wished they had used it.Flag

This early diagnois helped the family to understand thier daughter's behaviors and mannerisms. The people associated w/ this program taught them how to work w/ theri child. I hope that other families will be able to have the opportunities that they did!Flag

Name: Kathy Ruoff on Feb 8, 2005State:Country: USComments: The incidence of growth in many levels of Autism in our very young is extrememly high. If you make the mistake of cutting funding for First Steps program now, you alone will be responsible for creating a massive onslought on our schools in a few years of children who needed development help and did not get it at the time when it would have been most effective and beneficial. The school systems will not be able to accommodate all the extra services that will be required and students across the board will suffer setbacks. Matt Blunt, this is a poor time for you to demonstrate - so early in your new administration - that you do not have the gift of forward-thinking needed to promote and sustain positive growth for the future.Flag

Name: Beth Crancer on Feb 9, 2005State: MOCountry: USComments: First steps plays a vital role in helping children at the very earliest age. It is during these years that children can recieve interventions for a variety of special needs. It is not only the children that recieve these benefits, but the entire family as well as the community.Flag
