Name: Elizabeth Nicholson on Jul 12, 2010Comments: Closing any library really has to be the last resort as they are much used and valued. Any library I go to in the borough is always pretty busy so it's not as if they're not used and we pay for these amenities in our council tax. Please don't close any of the libraries but in particular the one at Crofton Park I use regularly so would hate to see it close. It would be a real loss.Flag

Name: Marita Sanders on Jul 12, 2010Comments: Lewisham's Library service is an outstandingly superb resource, of which I am an appreciative user. We should be expanding and promoting its use even further. To even consider shutting down Crofton Park and other local libraries is to let down, fail, and cheat on the loyal, supportive electorate which just two months ago placed their trust in our Labour Council and Mayor by voting them back into office. Everyone needs access to culture, resources, information about community events and services in a social setting. If we're facing austerity we need to definitely Get Out More - and going round the library is a worthwhile Way to Go. I am a pensioner and I am prepared to have the No Rise in Council Tax pledge reviewed - if it would help to make the Council see sense on this disastrous plan.Flag

Name: Brian Keaney on Jul 12, 2010Comments: As a children's author, I am often asked what books I read when I was a child and I always answer, library books. There were no other books in my house since my parents did not have the money to buy them. I am certain that there are still sections of society for whom books remain unaffordable. Without a public library, therefore, many children will never have the option of reading as a leisure activity. Since an established reading habit is one of the things that makes a huge difference in increasing social mobility, closing down libraries is only likely to increase the gap between rich and poor.Flag

Name: Lindsey Davis on Jul 13, 2010Comments: Cuts have to be made, but I am very disappointed that Lewisham wants to close Crofton Park. This is a small library, but so good that I researched several of my novels - now established as international bestsellers - there. I have been back several times for events and it is still the thriving place I knew when I lived nearby. In trying times, people need the consolation of books and I urge Lewisham Council to think again before it's too late.Flag

Name: Alec Mutch on Jul 13, 2010Comments: Glad to see you are fighting your council on this most important facility, the library is the hub of knowledge and should remain open. Any council closing such places is in my opinion short sighted and extremely selfish, they are a vital service placed in importance to the public along with that of public toilets, we are currently fighting to re-open a closed toilet near us, just like you, the council have closed it to save money, shame on both councils. see "save our public toilets"Flag

Name: Anne Schman on Jul 15, 2010Comments: There are many ways in which libraries are important. They can be used all day by different categories of people, pensioners and schoolchildren being among the main categories, but parents with growing families can make good use of the wide variety of volumes of fact and fiction available to keep the whole family interested in how the world works. The library is not just for leisure, it is also part of our education system.Flag

Name: Anonymous on Jul 16, 2010Comments: Please don't close Crofton Park Library. It has been a valuable resource for my family, and especially children who enjoy the much wider range of books they can get from the library. They have taken part in the summer reading challenges as well, and have really enjoyed those. If anything, the library should get a little investment to spruce it up.Flag

Often we take books home; sometimes we just stay for an hour in the lovely children's library and explore and read together. This beautiful local library continues to be a valued resource for local residents and schools. After many decades of service it still has a vital role as a people's university catering to all ages and types.Flag

Name: Dr Ben Gidley on Jul 16, 2010Comments: This library is a heavily used local resource, relied on by parents of small children, by school kids studying for exams, by people who cannot afford internet access otherwise, and by many others. It is also a historic building that once lost by the public will be lost for ever.Flag
