Name: Susie Dingle on Dec 18, 2009Comments: Castle Toward has over the years provided many thousands of children with the opportunity to participate in musical and other activities which would otherwise have been out of their reach. In these days when councils and the government are so concerned about social inclusion and providing lifelong learning opportunites for ALL it seems an anathema that a facility, the whole raisin d'être of which is to provide just such opportunites should be being closed down cy a council too short sighted to see the full value of it.Flag

Name: Iain McLarty on Dec 18, 2009Comments: Glasgow School's Symphony Orchestra courses at Toward were some of the best times I had while I was at school. Without spending time there I would never have decided to become a musician. When politicians are always talking about helping young people get a step up in the world especially through making culture and education more accessible this decision to try and close somewhere which has one of the best track records for inspiring young people in these very areas is perverse and a national disgrace.Flag

Name: Professor Blair H. Smith on Dec 19, 2009Comments: Castle Toward was the backdrop that facilitated my transition from perceived mediocrity to self-belief. I would not be the person I am today without the opportunities provided, and self-confidence bossted by the Glasgow Schools' Orchestra; and it's difficult to imagine that these opportunities could have been anything like the same had the Orchestra courses not been held at Castle Toward. One of the best things was the ability to mix different people from different backgrounds in a free environment, and it certainly did a lot for me, breaking down social barriers that might well be remaining now without the Castle Toward experience. To lose Castle Toward is the same as losing Coronation Street and/or the Royal Family.Flag

I was there in my teens for orchestras and I teach many pupils who have been there with orchestras and with the art department at my school for art courses and they all love it. It's a great educational resource as it provides the right atmosphere for people to concentrate on the job at hand, with no distractions whatsoever.Flag

Name: Kirsteen Faulds on Dec 19, 2009Comments: I am showing my support due the knowledge that the steps the council have taken over the years, but particularly since April of this year, have been with the aim of hounding Actual Reality out, so that it can sell the land for a housing development The Council cannot be allowed to act in this decietful manner any longer. Allow Actual Reality to buy the premises, as you should have done back in 2008 when a bid was madeFlag

Name: Ross Paterson on Dec 19, 2009Comments: If Argyll and Bute council bought Toward as a compulsory purchase for £1, in doing so they have committed to protecting and maintaing this wonderful asset. Financial hard times is no excuse for renaiging from this promise. Keep it wind and water tight, keep it safe but keep it tatty and useable for the enjoyment of the people of the west of Scotland. I think you'll come up against a surprising amount of resistance otherwise.Flag

Name: David Doyle on Dec 19, 2009Comments: This has been and should continue to be a facility for promoting youth and adult endeavours in music and the arts. There are many other ways in which this wonderful building could be made to serve the development of young people. It would be inexcusable if a regional council were to disregard this and allow it all to fall into disrepair. The council should be made to account for the actions they have taken to meet their obligations, entered into when they bought Castle Toward. They should also be made to account for their failings. If building repairs have not been done, they should be done now. If fire regulations have to be met, they should be. It would not break the bank of this council if they did what was required. The payback would be the eternal involvement in Argyll of those who have loved attending events at Castle Toward. David DoyleFlag

Name: Siobhan Paterson on Dec 19, 2009Comments: Castle toward is a fantastic venue for music/outdoor courses. I also have enjoyed the "castle toward experience" and feel that there is not another venue which is comparable to castle toward in terms of accessibility, accomodation, food, grounds and orchestral rehearsal space. To even consider selling on such an asset is a discrace. I am sure that the family members who generously donated castle toward to glasgow city council did so with the good faith that it would continue to be used for as many educational opportunities as possible.Flag

Name: Edward Doyle on Dec 20, 2009Comments: I was once leader of the Strathclyde Schools Symphony Orchestra. I never expressed my gratitude to anybody for the privilege of that experience - such is the selfishness of youth. Off we went on a bus and a ferry to that remarkable place - Castle Toward - with some of the great future talents of British classical music. Most of those children didn't come from privileged backgrounds unlike me. But they were given an opportunity that their talent deserved - to spend time making music in a castle and then to tour abroad. My first tour was to Germany and we didn't have to pay a penny. Thank you Strathclyde. We have to ask - what do we want for our children in future?Flag
