Name: Rosanne Radavich on Apr 28, 2011Affiliation/relationship to Brown Fencing: Old opponent- Purdue Women’s EpeeComments: I spent five years in Purdue’s fencing club, and had the pleasure and challenge of fencing Brown’s women. I came in a timid mouse, with just enough nerve to attend, and left five years later as the armorer, women’s epee captain, and one of the guiding forces in the club. Fencing requires team work, perseverance and heart, tests and tempers determination, and creates athletes. It also fosters skills and attitudes that make fencers more likely to succeed in life after college, which should be every University’s goal. The skills fencing built made me a better teacher, which secured a teaching assistantship to fund my graduate school. They also made me a strong and competent leader, which has been invaluable as an officer in the United States Army, and a veteran of Iraq. I have seen first-hand the value of fencing, and urge you to maintain this program within your University.Flag

Name: Marcus on Apr 28, 2011Affiliation/relationship to Brown Fencing: Eternal RivalComments: Fencing has always been an important part of my life and I'd hate to see this team go. I trained at Brown one summer during high school, and that was when I really fell in love with the sport. It's a shame that this team has to suffer because of an alleged lack of interest by the Brown community. The corporation should also take into account how the Brown fencing team has impacted people from other colleges. I'm sure a lot of people signing this petition are not only Brunonians, but fellow fencers who were impressed with the team's sportsmanship and integrity. And fencing was one of the original Olympic sports! Can you really call yourself a member of the Ivy League if you're not firm in your Greco-Roman roots?Flag

Elimiating them would constitute a significant loss to Ivy League Fencing. It would also be a great loss to the Brown University community. As a former captain of the Yale Women's Fencing Team, I know that fencing at college can be an extremely enriching activity. It develops the personality and helps form lasting friendships. It is a noble sport that only matches the spirit of a respected institution and the values of a liberal arts education.Flag

Name: Mark L. Masters on Apr 28, 2011Affiliation/relationship to Brown Fencing: I have sent several of my athletes to Brown Univ.Comments: Brown is a unique school and fencing is a unique sport that has an appeal at the intellectual level, not just the physcial. Many students who would not find sucess or have no interest in conventional team sports love fencing and all these students are of above adverage intellectually. The intensity of focus also for competing is greater than any other sport and has a positive effect on the academic performance of the student. Many of the atheles I train have an interest in Brown because of the fencing team! If Brown has not fencing team it will lose a potential draw for many the smart and focused kind of students a school like Brown is interested in.Flag

Some of the criteria for cutting programs include history, competitiveness, and history; areas where I believe fencing excel in.Flag

Name: Debra Weiss Huddleston (class Of '84 And P'15) on Apr 28, 2011Affiliation/relationship to Brown Fencing: Alum and my daughter, Hailey Huddleston, will be a Brown Freshman this September and is a "D' rated epee fencerComments: Keep the Brown fencing program!!! In addition to my husband and I both being Brown alums, we were thrilled when our daughter, Hailey, decided to apply to Brown early decision and was accepted. One of the compelling reasons that Brown was her first choice is because of its fencing program. As a "D" rated epee fencer, Hailey has competed at numerous North America Cup tournaments and has qualified three years in a row to compete at fencing nationals. This July she will be competing in four events at the nationals in Reno. Hailey was excited about joining Brown's fencing team and competing at a varsity level. As Brown alums, my husband and I looked forward to seeing Hailey continue to improve and cheering her on as she represented our alma mater. We are extremely upset that Brown has proposed eliminating the fencing program.Flag

The loss of this program would be a big blow to NCAA Fencing. Fencing may not be such a prominent sport, but has been growing within US at a ferocious pace. I fear if the program is cut, it might be premature as fencing gains more recognition.Flag

Name: Janusz Bednarski on Apr 28, 2011Affiliation/relationship to Brown Fencing: fencing institutional partnerComments: Eliminating fencing from the Brown University is not proper action. This sport is a very old sport with tradition and history and with great results in USA and beyond. Mariel Zagunis, Olympic Champion from Athens and Beijing and many other World class US student athletes are the proof that fencing during studies can produce top results. In a addition it is individual sport based on the fast thinking, decision making processes in deficit of time which is typical for life in modern times.Hope that brown University one of the best in the country would like to have this kind of modern sport on the campus.Do not remove fencing from the varsity teams.Flag
