Name: Matthew Durfee on Aug 18, 2008Comments: In these times of economic woe, it is crucial that institutions of higher education are not forced out by shortsighted acts or temporary fixes. I, for one, would rather have stimulated, creative minds working towards long-term solutions to problems that plague our society rather than an indoor water park, which only provides a temporary reprieve from our responsibilities to each other as humans.Flag

Name: Lea Barnes on Aug 18, 2008Comments: As a Pi Phi, I believe Arrowmont is one of the greatest treasures that our fraternity has given to others - not just in Gatlinburg but throughout the country. At this time, we - the sisters of Pi Beta Phi - have the opportunity to do the right thing and preserve this treasure. If we cannot continue our commitment to the arts, we need to work with others who can and will.Flag

Name: Vince Pitelka on Aug 18, 2008Comments: I was surprised and alarmed to find out that the future of Arrowmont School for Arts and Crafts is threatened. Arrowmont is a beacon and standard-bearer for quality, tradition, and innovation in American fine craft, and to my knowledge has always been a point of pride for Pi Beta Phi Fraternity. Arrowmont is also a tremendous point of pride and cultural enrichment for the City of Gatlinburg, and anything else done with the property would be much more loss than gain. Nothing could replace Arrowmont.Flag

It is mind-boggling, heart-wrenching INSANITY that the idea of eliminating such an important place from our region would even be considered for one tiny moment!!!!!!!!! PLEASE realize what a horrible thing it would be to go through with this!!!! There is plenty of bad and evil happening all around us and it is our duty as compassionate, intelligent human beings to preserve what beauty is let and to create more in a world gone mad!!!!! That is what Arrowmont is all about. PLEASE! PLEASE! PLEASE! DO NOT GO THROUGH WITH THIS!!!!!!! YOU SIMPLY CAN NOT DO THIS!!!!! I spent nearly 3 years of my life there, and as i said before I am often homesick for Arrowmont and long to be there! How could you seriously consider doing something so heinous and down right evil I can not believe that I came home today to find this!!!! I am sick to my stomach.Flag

Name: Ellen Klamon on Aug 18, 2008Comments: Arrowmont is a stunning school. It is a gem in the Smokies that should be preserved for the environment as well as for those wanting to expand their artistic skills. It would be a shame to let this tradition die in favor of a waterpark .Flag

Name: Lynne Burke on Aug 18, 2008Comments: To say that a water park and another condominum development is more beneficial to the community of Gatlainburg than education in art provided by Arrowmontis a blatant and disgusting example of greed. Creating an educational opportunity for artists and teachers should certainly outweigh greed. Too bad greed is always blind.Flag

Name: Anonymous on Aug 18, 2008Comments: Arrowmont has been, since it's inception in Gatlinburg, the only place to provide an opportunity for locals as well as many visitors to experience the broadening world of art. It is unthinkable that the "saving grace" of East Tennessee should be relegated into just another development offering nothing more than financial opportunities to a few. I sincerely hope this insitution so wisely initiated by your sorority can continue to build and open up opportunities for so many as it has for so many decades.Flag

Name: Susan Edwards on Aug 18, 2008Comments: I have taken many classes at Arrowmont, from 1975-2005, and they have directed by life to embrace the arts. I have also worked at Arrowmmont as receptionist while working on my MFA at the University of Tennessee, and I have taught Children's classes, Community classes and Summer Workshops in Watercolor and Mixed Media. I strongly disagree with the decision to sell the Arrowmont property. Arrowmont has contributed greatly to the Gatlinburg community and the ability of Pi Phi Elementary School children to walk to the gallery with their teacher is no small consideration. The outreach program that Arrowmont provides to the high school is also invaluable. Arrowmont is an oasis on the Gatlinburg strip, the Arrowcraft store is a landmark, and the office that was once the town health clinic adds charm to an increasingly uncharming environment. The display cases are delightfully non-commercial and it is sickening that Pi Phi would be so short-sighted as to sell out to a developer. Please reconsider!Flag

Name: Ben Strear on Aug 18, 2008Comments: Arrowmont is perhaps the last bastion of cultural prosperity left in Sevier County. Along with providing invaluable educational services to the community, Arrowmont is a hub by which artists, both local and national, converge. If Arrowmont is to leave, expect the artistic community to follow. Do not expect the for-profit art studios in the surrounding area to fill the creative void, for historically they owe their livelihoods and existence to Arrowmont. I am disappointed at the incredibly shortsighted decision to place Arrowmont on the market.Flag

I have spent some of the most introspective and creative weeks at Arrowmont, and it benefits adults as well as children. Please, Gatlinburg does not need more shops and carnival-type atmosphere. Keep Arrowmont!! Thank you!Flag
