Arrowmont has developed a reputation as one of the premier craft schools in the country and has drawn thousands of people both nationally and internationally. It is a culturally rich highlight to what has become a commercially dense tourist area. In light of this, your fraternity is holding on to an amazing organization that makes YOU LOOK GOOD as well as the city of Gatlinburg. Please do not let commercial interests remove what has become a cultural landmark.

Arrowmont is an important institution in the history of American Craft, and remains a vital entity in its furtherance. By selling this property for development, Pi Beta Phi would be making a clear statement against cultural interests and against traditions that are a vital part of the cultural identity of the United States of America. To consider selling this property is pure folly. To say that it would benefit the Gatlinburg community is pure insult.

22	Mari	Ever since I attended Pi Beta Phi Elementary School, I was taken to Arrowmont for "field trips." From the first grade on we learned to throw pottery, paint, work with enamels, etc. Most or all of us would never have gotten to work with clay or glass if it wasn't for Arrowmont. After I graduated from high school and went to college, I interned there at Arrowmont two summers in a row and did a work study exchange program. Every relative or friend that has come to visit us here in Gatlinburg, we have taken to Arrowmont to show them what a gem lies here in the Smokies. It is an incredible resource for the people of the Southeast USA and all over the world. To sell the school's land and replace Arrowmont with another tourist attraction or time share facility is a crime, to say the least. The Pi Beta Phi Fraternity started Arrowmont to bring healthcare, literacy, and education to this part of the United States, and it is still doing just that today. When I try to imagine my life without the influence of Arrowmont, it is difficult and saddening to do so. Please, please, please, Pi Beta Phi, rethink this sale. Instead, think of me, and the hundreds of children just like me who know and love Arrowmont and the services it provides.

24	Michael Anderson	Arrowmont is one of the few cultural institutions that Sevier County much less Gatlinburg can lay claim to. The loss of Arrowmont to a timeshare resort can be characterized as little more than one more step in the dumbing of America. Yes, money is important and I imagine the timeshare folks are waiving a very tempting carrot. And though I may not agree with adjectives like tourist traps, excess consumption or greed I do feel that trading Arrowmont for more timeshare hawkers on the street intimidating families as they try to enjoy their day and the non-invasive merchants of town couldn't be more degrading to the community as a whole. In this case Pi Beta Phi Fraternity will have transformed itself from being an icon of education and culture to little more than one more financial opportunist. Is there not an opportunity to have your cake and eat it too. How about the developer relocates the school and assists Arrowmont in its financial future in the community?

It is an island of beauty in the middle of a town that seems to have other values. "..developing the property is another opportunity to benefit the community.." Really..how? Shall we tear down all of our cultural institutions and build condos and high rises to 'benefit the community?' Line the pockets of a few seems more likely.
