Dear Principals Cramer, Valdez and Susman and Superintendant Constance Hubbard:

We believe that that the vast majority of Piedmont parents want their children to have the benefit of the 4th grade instrument program as we know it. This two-decade strong program has been a model for other school districts. It is in jeopardy of being replaced with a method (usually used for children under 6) of teaching rhythm that uses xylophones and recorders, NOT traditional band/orchestra instruments. Our children would NO longer get to play a variety of string, brass, and woodwind instruments in 4th grade for 3 month rotations with instruction by instrumental specialist before selecting an instrument in 5th grade.

This elementary music curriculum leads directly into the award-winning Piedmont Middle School and Piedmont High School Orchestra, Band and vocal music programs.

Our kids are depending on you to continue this impressive and very exciting arts program. There is nowhere else a child would get the chance to try flute, clarinet, violin, bass, cello, french horn and trumpet (and more) and find the one that truly inspires him or her.

Piedmont is known for excellence in education. This program IS excellence in education, and we are proud to be in a district that understands how valuable these early experiences are.

Please keep the 4th grade instrument program!
