Last Friday (1/20) the parents of children in the classrooms at St. Jude Parish were sent a letter from Fr. Brando explaining that, because of a large deficit in pledges over expected expenses for 2006, we must consider abandoning full stewardship and returning to a tuition model for our school. The history of this deficit – and four specific solutions – were outlined at a HASA meeting the following Monday (1/23) where a straw poll suggested that parents were alternately in favor of full stewardship and tuition.
Although there are reasons to be concern about the projected financial deficit, the rapid pace toward reinstituting tuition is unwarranted. We have invested four years in the full stewardship model and deserve more than four days as a parish to determine its future.
We believe that there is sufficient spiritual maturity and financial generosity in the pews to support our journey toward full stewardship – at a level that will provide a competitive wage for our excellent teachers and protect our parochial model.
St. Jude is both capable of more and deserving of more than a secular solution to the present financial concern. After all, we have two bottom lines to shepherd as a religious community – one that is financial and the other that is spiritual.
Although we are in favor of full stewardship, we are not seeking a specific solution through this petition – just more time to reflect on what we are doing as a parish.
Please sign this petition if you believe that…
ONE
Full stewardship is a concern of the full parish and not just the parents of children in our classrooms.
TWO
We deserve more time to consider prayerfully our financial needs and the capacity of full stewardship to meet them.
Thank you very much for participating in this petition. And PLEASE forward this link to everyone you know at St. Jude Parish. |

We are a group of concerned parishioners who believe that St. Jude has a unique responsibility to total stewardship. Some of us have children in the school, but we don't all. We represent a range of income brackets and a range of stewardship levels.
We take seriously our Bishops' exhortation in their 1993 pastoral letter, “Stewardship: A Disciple’s Response.”
The Christian steward accepts God’s gifts gratefully; cultivates them responsibly; shares them generously; and is accountable before God for using them wisely. |
