Nor should Roshni. Shame on you Nottingham City Council. Do the right thing and reinstate the service. Save Roshni.Flag

I would request the council tio continue helping each other for the good work otherwise there would be no voice raising for domestic violence and protect womenFlag

Name: Jit Sandhu on Mar 4, 2010Comments: As a South Asian woman myself and having carried out research in this area, I feel the closure of ROSHNI would be detrimental to the South Asian Community. Roshni is a unique service which meets the needs of this community. The work they are doing is extremely valuable to providing social and economic support to those who are suffering from domestic violence. Understanding the context is which abuse take place is a given in all agencies providing this type support. However understanding the cultural implications of abuse/reporting abuse/taking action against abuse is central to meeting this group of women’s needs. Other agencies (i.e. the national women’s aid) do a fantastic job, however as all agencies working in this area are underresourced. My concern lies with the fact that extra resources will not be pumped in to these agencies to meet this need. Roshni meets a vital need in this community. Speaking as a South Asian woman our community is still several steps behind the western community in recognising abuse is abuse, not just a fact of life. Only with the work of organisations such as Roshni can we help to change this. This brings me on to the women who suffer abuse. There is something to be said about speaking/seeking help from agencies who understand the severe implications of abuse in a cultural context. What will happen to those women who have been forced in to marriage, have poor English and as a result feel isolated from accessing national services? They will remain in the vicious circle of abuse they are in.Flag

Name: Asif Majid on Mar 15, 2010Comments: This service is vital for Asian women as they have no one who can help them in their own language. Most of the victims who are from Pakistan, India or Bangladesh cannot speak English and hence need that personal touch that only people like ROSHNI can give.Flag
