Name: Charles B. Anderson on Mar 4, 2009Comments: My father, Commodore John W. Anderson, was master of the SS UNITED STATES from 1952-1964. I have watched in dismay while classic transatlantic US-flag liners like the SS CONSTITUTION and SS INDEPENDENCE were towed to the breakers, while foreign liners like the RMS QUEEN MARY and SS ROTTERDAM have gone on to lead useful second lives as museums, hotels and convention centers, creating jobs and other economic and cultural benefits. The SS UNITED STATES is the last remaining US-flag liner and to consign her to breakers in India or Bangalesh would be a national disgrace, tantamount to selling the Spirit of St. Louis or Old Ironsides for scrap. Congress must act now to ensure that this irreplaceable national treasure and symbol of our great maritime heritage is preserved for future generations of Americans.Flag

Name: Greg Shutters on Mar 13, 2009Comments: The SS United States is a national treasure, a historic monument to American ingenuity. Losing the SS United States, which is becoming increasingly likely without government intervention, would be a tragedy. This ship absolutely needs to be preserved for future generations to marvel at and enjoy.Flag

Jones on Mar 13, 2009Comments: We the people of these United States must not allow this great ship to be scrapped, and must return her to service so that future generations of Americans can see and feel her greatness. This is NOT the time to shy away from a great challenge, but rather to embrace it. It is URGENT that we act! This great symbol of America must never be allowed to leave our shores, or to wind up in the scrappers in Alang.Flag

When I saw her in Philadelphia I broke down and cried. Please save her as she is part of our history along with many memories for her crew and passengers.Flag

But we must not allow this symbol of American engineering and pride to be lost on the polluted shores of India .Flag
