Name: Margaret Jordan on Jun 13, 2010Comments: Ballincollig town should be allowed and encouraged to conserve its streetscape heritage. The OPW is showing complete disregard for the history and sense of place which Ballincollig town needs to preserve, in order to retain its unique identity.Flag

Name: Jeremiah Aherne on Jun 13, 2010Comments: Greetings, I would seem that I got off to an incorrect assumption thinking that your Garda Station was being closed down. Please disregard my last rant. I hope I am correct now in asking you not to demolish the former Garda Station.Flag

Name: Anonymous on Jun 13, 2010Comments: Save the face of Ballincollig. What is the Irish government doing? Is there a government watchdog anywhere? Over the past few years Ballincollig is gaining a set of unimaginative concrete facades, indistinguishable from many boring suburban 'developments''. Come on people of Ireland, start making your own mind up! This 19th century building can still be saved. It is in good structural condition. It is still a landmark even on that building site and should still remain a landmark.Flag

Name: Richard T. Cooke on Jun 13, 2010Comments: Isn't it great that we proud Corkonians are becoming more aware of our rich colourful heritage which is all around us and that we are preserving its legacy for future generations. And wouldn't it be lovely to see the old romantic Ballincollig Garda Station embracing the 21st century modern architecture. This historical gem must be saved. Our children's children will thank us for it. The architects of our city are its people. We are the guardians of our rich inheritance.Flag

Name: Mark J. Davies on Jun 14, 2010Comments: I visted Ballincollig for the first time this year, as part of a quest for information about my 18th-century Cork ancestors. The Ballincollig Gunpowder Mills are intimately associated with the Leslie family. The modernisation of Ballincollig has evidently been rapid in recent years, and I can sympathise greatly with a desire among residents to save some reminders of the past - especially ones so attractive and well-proportioned as the Garda Station.Flag

Name: David Grant on Jun 16, 2010Comments: The destruction of this fine old building would amount to nothing short of wanton vandalism — particularly as this act is to facilitate car-parking. This building has much to offer for the future, and stands for much of importance in the past. Please re-consider plans to destroy such a fine building. Too much of our past has already been violated.Flag

Name: Niclas Ap Glyn on Jun 18, 2010Comments: Ballincollig is a truly remarkable historical and industrial site. The industrial process of making gunpowder as displayed at Ballincollig is facinating. Its defences show the status of the native Irish outside to the imperial forces within. From a historical point of view the site has in addition European, American and Indian dimensions. The garda station is yet another part of the site's history threatened with being dismantled and sent to oblivion.Flag

Name: John F. Walsh on Jun 20, 2010Comments: My Late father , Richard Walsh, served this country during "The Emergency" and was stationed in Murphy Bks ,Ballincollig. About 20 yrs ago , he told me that he was in "The Stores "area , which was one of the Red Bricked buildings that are now about to be knocked. For that reason alone , I would like his memory not to be forgotten by knocking the builing so that a Car Park can be built there instead !Flag

Name: Mark Collins on Jun 21, 2010Comments: John, I showed you the exterior of the Garda station when you visited Ballincollig last year. It really is a beautiful red brick building and would be ideally suited to a social use e.g. a MABS office. I urge you to intervene here and save this building. Our main street has been ravaged by O'Flynn Construction.Flag

Name: Kieran O'Shea on Jun 22, 2010Comments: i fully support the retention of the barracks building(s) and would suggest that a refurbished building, when funds permit, could be put in use as a museum dedicated mainly to the services that operated from the location for many years. Ballincollig needs a museum and this could answer a number of needs in our community.Flag

Name: John D Barry on Jun 22, 2010Comments: I am happy to write that the attractiveness of Ballincollig centre has much improved in recent years. Please do not miss this opportunity to enhance it further by safeguarding and maintaining this valuable piece of architectural heritage. A building of this style and age would complement greatly the more recent positive developments in the centre of the town.Flag
