This petition was started by Ballincollig Heritage Association. It is a belated response to what appears to be a fait accompli, a situation we first learned of over a year ago. Having found out that the site was owned by the OPW and that they had no qualms about demolishing this historic building, we thought at first that there was no point in opposing it, especially since the OPW does not appear to be subject to planning appeals by an bord plenala. It appears that in Ireland, many buildings built after 1700 are not given the same status as those built before this date and this seems to be the case here.
It is only recently after attending seminars at SECAD where many communities have complained about the lack of public consultation in many local planning decisions that BHA decided to act. By starting an ipetition, we are allowing the people of Ballincollig to have their say. We have been heartened by the many strongly felt comments which show that we are not alone in thinking this a rash and ill conceived decision.

garda station following the receipt of a letter from the Dept of the
