| 1454 | worku | Dear High Commissioner:
I am writing on behalf of Save Ethiopian Refugee International (SERI), a non-profit organization located in Washington, D.C, dedicated to promoting awareness of the plight of Ethiopian Refugees throughout the world.
As you know, there are hundreds of thousands of Ethiopian Refugees scattered around the world. Refugees International recently reported that political and religious persecutions are the twin causes of involuntary migration of Ethiopians around the world. Human Rights Watch in its 2008 report has extensively documented the massive refugee problem caused by political violence in the Ogaden region of Ethiopia. In the rest of Ethiopia, particularly in Oromia, Gambela, Afar, Amhara and Southern regions, large numbers of civilians are increasingly joining the ranks of the Ethiopian refugee population worldwide because of political persecution, repression, harassment and intimidation and widespread human rights violations.
Large numbers of Ethiopian refugees are currently dispersed across many countries in Africa and the Middle East. They live under extreme hardship conditions, often without adequate food, shelter and other social support networks. Assistance from international aid agencies has been inadequate. The current situation of Ethiopian refugees in Kenya, Libya, Uganda and Yemen testifies to their tragic and distressing circumstances. But the issues affecting the larger Ethiopian refugee population are varied, and include, illustratively, among others:
Arbitrary imprisonment of Ethiopian refugees and denial of due process (Libya).
Physical attacks, assaults and unlawful killings of Ethiopian refugees (Kenya, Uganda and South Africa).
Lack of food and basic necessities (various neighboring African countries).
Rise in the incidence of suicide and mental problems among Ethiopian refugees (various middle eastern countries).
Denial of resettlement of opportunities (various European countries).
Lack of registration and accurate count of Ethiopian refugees (international refugee assistance organizations).
Lack of effective access to grievance procedures in seeking international refugee assitance.
Disappearance and forceful repatriation of refugees back to Ethiopia.
Save Ethiopian Refugees International believes that the issues itemized above fall within the jurisdiction of UNHCR. We believe that an inquiry by your office regarding the concerns we have raised will be the most important step in the search for a permanent and durable solution to the problems of Ethiopian refugees. We respectfully request your office to look into the matters set forth above.
We are prepared to respond to any questions you may have on the Ethiopian refugee situation, and assist the UNHCR in any way possible.
Best Regards,
Abebe Belew

| 1462 | Anonymous | Systematic and consistent Human right abuses in their righteous country of origin offers left no choice to the Ethiopians but to look out word in to the unknown, run and run in similar way to those who were pushed by TSUNAMI. I only hope that the selfless Human right activists around the glob will keep their fight to represent these helpless once. Being a refugee has never been the choice for most Ethiopians but imposed on them by the repressive system. |
