Newfield Community Association is strongly opposed to the proposals made by Durham County Council to close the Todhills waste recycling site near Willington due to the following issues: • It is less than a year since the site was totally revamped to address legislation issues relating to access and health and safety using tax payers money. • The closure is against the interests of all residents who use this well run poplar site and to the detriment of the environment, as its closure could lead to 15,000 residents in this area having to travel further to recycle their household waste to areas such as Tudhoe or Tindale Crescent therefore increasing their carbon footprint. • It could increase the number of fly-tipping incidents which occur in and around the village of Newfield and the surrounding areas, as people may not be prepared to travel to other sites to recycle their household waste. • Recycling rates may reduce further adding more costs to Durham County Council in landfill tax reducing the savings made by closing the sites. • Providing a mobile recycling service is not cost effective unless you are going to charge residents for the use of this service. Newfield Community Association ask that you show your objection to Durham County Council’s proposals by signing this petition.

Petition Update

Last month 77% of waste was recycled from this site. So far from combined petitions (paper and ipetition over 460 people have signed).  Letters were sent to all DCC Cabinet Members and so far we have not received any replies so much for public consultation.  DCC also organised a public consultation at Byers Green Village Hall advertised in Wear Valley Advertiser neither Byers Green or Newfield get this publication no invite was extended to Newfield Community Association so sadly we missed an opprtunity to speak to them directly.
